SUPER AVC TYPE-R

Advanced electronic boost controller

Highly flexible boost control with revolutionary new functions; Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD).

The Super AVC-R is the premium closed-loop electronic boost controller on the market. The AVC-R allows flexible control over virtually every aspect of boost control and adds new innovative functions such as injector pulse monitoring and gear specific boost control. Some key functions include: RPM-based boost and solenoid duty cycle control, scramble boost, self learning mode, 2D ghost map trace mode, analog display mode, real time replay and peak hold data modes. The AVC-R utilizes an ultra-fast microprocessor and a high quality solenoid valve to control boost. The result is ultra-fast response and accurate, stable boost control.

Due to the complexity of this product, A'PEX recommends having the AVC-R and other A'PEX electronics installed and tuned by authorized A'PEX Power Excel Shops.

UNIT

Monitor Mode: Allows monitoring of up to four channels at one time. Also allows tracing of AVC-R monitor functions.

Setting Mode: There are three setting modes: A, B, or OFF. A total of two boost settings are available with the AVC-R. Selecting OFF will turn off all boost control.

Etc. Mode: The etcetera menu is used for configuring the variables that allow the AVC-R to properly control boost. (i.e. the number of cylinders, speed sensor type, throttle sensor type, gear judge, etc.)

Up to four data channels can be selected for monitoring: Intake Manifold Vacuum/Boost Pressure

Engine RPM
Vehicle Speed
Throttle Position
AVC-R Solenoid Valve Duty Cycle
Injector Duty Cycle (if connected)

Up to four of these parameters can be monitored in three different ways:
Numerical
Analog Meter
Graph Display

If monitored numerically, pressing the up key allows the user tosee a peak hold value for the chosen parameter.
If monitored in analog meter mode, up to two meters can be displayed at one time. By pressing the up key, the analog meters will hold the peak value. If the user is under 3 or 4 channel mode, only the first two channels will be displayed.
If monitored in graphic display mode, pressing the up key will allow the AVC-R to start "sampling" or memorizing data channels. The memorized graph can then be replayed by pressing the right key. Anytime during replay the right key can be pressed, and the display can be paused. To review any part of the memorized graph, the user can push the left key during replay. Anytime during backwards replay, the left key can be pressed to pause the display.
If monitoring one channel, the last 60 seconds can be replayed.
If monitoring two channels, the last 30 seconds can be replayed.
If monitoring three channels, the last 20 seconds can be replayed.
If monitoring four channels, the last 15 seconds can be replayed

Up to five parameters can be monitored, but only one at a time:

Boost
Speed
Throttle
Solenoid Duty
Injector Duty

The 2D Trace Mode displays one user-selected parameter against the engine RPM. The horizontal scale is the engine RPM and the vertical scale is the user-selected parameter. There are three ways to view the 2D Trace:

A simple cursor floats around the screen showing what the user-selected value is.

The graph has a 10 point floating trail to show the trend of the user-selected value.
View with a "Ghost Map" trace. The "Ghost Map" shows where the cursor has been, and does not clear until the user actually clears the screen.

The AVC-R has two pre-set boost levels, A and B. For example, channel A can be used for a low boost level, and channel B can be used for a high boost level. The user can then effectively switch between low and high boost modes. All adjustments made under the A mode will only effect the A mode. Likewise, all adjustments made under the B mode will only effect the B mode. If OFF is selected, the AVC-R solenoid valve will be deactivated, and boost levels will be regulated by the wastegate alone.

The setting mode allows setting of the target boost pressure and solenoid duty cycle. Both boost and solenoid duty are adjustable by user-selectable RPM points. After this mode is set, the boost is stable, and the throttle position is over 85%, the unit will begin self-learning the solenoid valve duty cycle. Self-learning will determine the optimum solenoid valve duty cycles for your particular engine.

By adding an optional momentary switch, the boost pressure can be increased or decreased for a certain duration of time. The user can also choose to increase or decrease solenoid duty cycle to make the additional amount of boost come in very quickly or progressively. This feature can help traction-limited vehicles.

This menu allows adjustment of engine RPM points to control boost pressure and solenoid duty cycles. The user can adjust eight points between 1500 and 9500 rpm in 500-rpm increments.

If unstable boost or boost drop occurs during boost control, the Feedback Speed setting may require adjustment. The feedback speeds are adjustable by gear. The higher the value, the faster the AVC-R will try to adjust the boost. However, if the value is too high, oscillation can occur. If the injector signal is used rather than engine rpm, we recommend that this function be turned off in every gear. Select the "X" value to turn off the Feedback Speed setting.

This mode allows the user to select the number of cylinders, the vehicle speed pulse type, and the throttle sensor type. All Japanese vehicles in America use a four-pulse speed sensor trigger. Most Japanese vehicles use an ascending type (arrow pointing to the upper right hand corner) throttle position sensor. If you are unsure of what type of throttle position sensor your vehicle has, you can check the Etc. Mode (sensor check) screen. If your throttle sensor voltage goes from 0-5V when going from closed to open, then your throttle position sensor is an ascending type. If your throttle sensor voltage goes from 5-0V when going from closed to open, then your throttle position sensor is a descending type. If your vehicle does not use a throttle position sensor, then use the "**" selection.

I have installed this unit on my SE recently. What is your particular question?

If you have the Engine Management Section of your Manual you will see the "pinouts" of the ECU so you can either splice or backprobe the appropriate pinouts.

I'm not sure of the solenoid setup on the V8, however, if its similar to the 4cyl esprits, you simply disconnect the vacuum hoses from the factory solenoid aand use them on the apexi supplied solenoid- a very easy install 1.5hours max (if you have your wiring manual).

Let me know if you have 1 or 2 factory solenoids controlling boost.

As far as wastegates, you do not touch anything mechanical to install this unit. This unit simply controls a solenoid (which is of a higher duty cylce capacity) independently of the factory computer, using most of the inputs from the factory computer.

The only problem I've found is that most japanese cars have a single VSS (vehicle speed sensor) buffered signal for the ecu- the lotus (4cyl) has a VSS (hi) and VSS (lo) so it is problematic to use the speed function. However, this is not really a necessity as the apexi self learns boost/duty cycle based on boost/RPM input.

Hello,
I have a 1990 Esprit SE and I would like to install this boost controller but I am wondering if we can raise the boost over the factory settings. Isnt there a boost cut or isnt the ecu controlling boost. How much boost are you running
