the esprit was in an underground carpark and there were oily residues on the louvers above the engine. verily i had washed the car just days ago. as parking there was priced $30 per diem, i complained about the muck, assuming it had dripped from overhead equipment. the proprieter claimed the oil was spit up by my engine, for english cars notoriously spit up oil. well i shall take my business elsewhere in future. only once before had i seen this type of residue and twas also after keeping same esprit in a carpark. why only in the esprit, and why only at carparks? can there be an oil fairy that squeezes betwixt louvers come night to waddle in engine grime?

Not sure I have an answer here, but I can tell you the same happens to Ferraris on a warm day in a parking garage... My theory (and I stress theory) is that there is quite a bit more muck in the air in a parking garage (esp. in areas in love with desil engines). Also, it is cooler in most parking gargages esp. if they are underground - causing the crap in the air to cool , particulate in some cases, and fall to the groud.

As is obvious, the motor is still quite hot for a while after parking and the heat rises up through the vents, louvers, etc.

So... my theory is that the crap from the air easily 'sticks' to the areas venting heat as the crap in the air 'falls'on the vents and louvers, heats up to sludgy muck, then cools into to greasy muck found after the motor cools. I have noticed that the outer (and warmer) walls in the parking garage seem to be dirtier than the cooler inside walls as well... supporting my theory. But hey, I am totally open to other explinations...
