I've been told that 4 cylinder Bosch fuel injection engines on Esprits have the same high compression as on HCIs. is this true?
thanks

Dan,

The introduction of the Bosche K-Jetronic Fuel Injection system and the Lotus HC engine ocurred simultaneously on USA Model 1986 Esprit Turbos.

The HC engine is a normal 910 engine, but the iron cylinder liners and the cast aluminum pistons were swapped for matched Nikosil coated Aluminum Liners and Forged Aluminum Pistons.

The fact that the pistons and liners now expanded and contracted at the same rate, tighter machining tolerances were achieved which allowed the compression ratio to rise from 7.5:1 in the iron lined, cast piston engines to 8.0:1 in the aluminum lined forged piston engine.

The 1986 Esprit turbo was introduced as the HC (High Compression) carburetted Esprit in every market except the USA where the car was designated the HCI (High Compression Injected) model. This included the addition of the Bosche K-Jetronic Fuel Injection system required to meet the US's higher emissions standards.

Lotus continued to offer carburetted models in various world markets until the introduction of the SE model in 1989 which used a GM-Delco electronic engine management system. This changeover ocurred in the middle of the model run, so there are still a few Bosche injected and carburetted early '89 models. Happy Motoring! Jim '85TE

In you case (USA Fed Esprit). The 88 model year is a re-skined 86-87 HCI. Your might be a bit quicker as I think the G body is little lighter than S body cars. I could be wrong but my SE is heavier than a G car but it does have the chargecooler and other parts not found in G cars. I think the body it self is heavier.
