How do you know if your rear quarter glass is leaking? Is there an easy way to check this out with us 'non mechanics' out there. Iam very worried every time it rains, which is every other day here, that I should be doing something to prevent my tanks from corroding. I don't have a garage anymore, as it's now my office.
Any tips please...

it is very unlikely that the glass seal will leak ,it's bonded in,generally very enthusiastically!!
corrosion under the tank can be a problem but it isn't a simple job to check.i should book it in with someone you trust to do a partial strip out to see

Hazzard,

I really hate to disagree with you, but the quarter glass seal is pretty lame and tends to leak rather readily. This is where most of the moisture which corrodes the fuel tanks come from.

The tanks sit on, and are topped by a piece of open cell foam, or in other parlance, a sponge! Any moisture which gets to this foam is trapped and allows corrosion to occur.

The solution is to seal the quarter glass using black silicone caulk and replace the open celled foam with closed cell foam. This will prevent water from reaching the tanks and prohibit retaining it in the event that some water does get in. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

The rear glass of the S body cars will leak when the Beta seals peels. The peeling is the delamination of the black Beta seal from the glass. It looks like crinkled black celophane that has pulled away from the inside of the glass. drips of water will run down the inside of glass during a car wash or rain. Sometimes the heat of engine compartment will make this water steam or fog up the rear quarter window. My seals although not completely gone is showing signs of a future failure. I will be doing this procedure in the spring and have seen it done a few times. To remove the glass you will manufacure your own tool. A small flexible diameter wire like a high note string from a violin or guitar will do. Attach pieces of wood on the ends of the wire like a garrote. The type a commando or spy would use to strangle someone. Slip the wire between the glass and body and cut the Beta seal away. Might be handy to have someone hold the glass. It would be terrible to drop and break the glass. After the glass is removed clean, prime, and reseal the glass.
