squeak?squeak sometimes as it goes
Discussion
there's a mysterious intermittent squeaking; loudest by the yankee passenger side door, it can't be recreated with the car out of gear and without velocity. it also never happens on a hot day. nothing to do with the engine warming up though, because on a cold day, it keeps squeaking even at the end of a long drive. thought it was a belt, but i adjusted the tensions in both directions and behaviour is not affected. if anything, it would be the alternator belt, given the location of the sound. belts look fine and are not glazed. any scoobies out there who can solve the mystery?
Well, if you have reached the point when you will try anything no matter how crazy it sounds... The trailing arm for the rear wheel runs forward and "connects up" just behind and just below the door sill as viewed from the rear wheel wells. If you remove the rear wheel this is very easy to see and get at... anyway, the bushings can get fowled up a bit and as a result you can get the very annoying squeek you described. Once wram from air temp or heat soak, the squeek can demish or stop all together. The sound travels around pretty well due to the location. Whith the wheel off, squirt some silicone spray into the joining area - drive for a bit and repeat if needed.
If it does not correct the problem, the worst thing you have done is spent some time lubbing up your trailing arm pivot point...
Drive topless!!!
