Hi i just purchased a 2000 esprit in US and i have a problem i planning on sending it back to dealer but its a long drive so i wanted to see if anyone can enlighten me....

My car's brakes come on at werid times on highway and roads , if i put the car in neutral when i think its happening the car slows to a dead stop like your braking to a smooth stop but the brakes are not on or no foots near the pedal and unless u pump the brakes some, the brakes will stay on while u drive...

Why are my brakes locking up like this....???

Help

Eric, can you tell whether it's the fronts or the rears that are braking? It could be a misadjusted parking brake cable, or are you sure you've disengaged the parking brake? The lever returns to the floor when set to ease ingress and egress. You need to pull this lever up smartly and then push the button to release it. I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but this can take some getting used to especially since you just got the car. Hope this helps...Happy Motoring! Jim '85TE

Eric,

You might want to raise the car and check for any noticeable drag on the wheels. As suggested, specifically check the emergency brake. The cable manually operates the rear brake caliper and if it sticks, is not properly adjusted or not fully disengaged you could get some problems.

Another possible method is the next time it happens, pull over and see if one particular brake rotor/caliper are excessively hot. This would indicate excessive drag. One of those infrared thermometers would be handy.

Where are you located in the US?

it's definently not the e-brake it is a bit tricky to work but thats not it. It seems to be the front but it must be both becuase my car dosen't pull to one side when it starts to brake it just slows to a stop like you would to pull over but your not using any brakes when this happens, you should be just rolling in N. I think it could be the pressure acummulator becuase it stops after i pump the brakes a bit

Im from Rhode island

Eric,

You may want to check to make sure you have no binds in the calipers (front and rear). While you're at it, just check the emergency brake cable and adjustment. How many miles are on the car? Have you renewed the brake fluid yet?

I suppose it's possible to have a problem with the brake booster or the ABS controller, but they are usually not an issue for brakes hanging on.

to be such a "smooth stop" my bet is rearbrakes dragging if the fronts were dragging the resultant heat would make them grab
