Gday day all
I have been searching for a air con for my 87 S3,not a lot of joy.
I have been told that a lot of Toyota parts from 82 -88 Toyota Corolla were used in S2 S3 cars
Is this true?
If so this would make ... making one up easier
Any body know of a after market air con that would fit S3

Thanks Alex

I know the compressor is the same as used on a Ford Granada. I hope that is of some help to you.
Are you trying to retro fit air con?

Try douglas valley breakers (they are listed on Kato's website at www.lotusespritworld.com) and see if they have any esprit aircond systems.

Their prices are very competitive.

Apart from that, really no big deal to make up a system when you return to oz- it will work better than any lotus version- you can fit a larger condenseror and evaporator unit and have a much more efficient system- I'm upgrading mine with parts from a VS/VR commodore (nice, cheap efficient GM unit available at all wrecker over here.

The only lotus part you need is the compressor& bracket- the aircond lines can be made up here by PIRTEK. The drier from a commodore can be used. Really not hard if to fit- the parts don't need to be from anyone manufacturer ie the condensor (read radiator) at the front just needs to fit in the esprit nose in front of the radiator- go to any japanese car wrecker and see what's about the right dimension- as thick as will fit.
Make sure you fit the 3 fans under your nose if your esprit originally had 2.

thanks Sydneyse

Gee it is all a lot clearer ... it seemed to me that Lotus built their car around the aircon !!!!

i have now purcahsed the compressor and bracket.
I will also hunt down a Ford Granada compressor once i have the Excel one...... it may be newer ..safer to have a spare or 2.
Any other info always gratefully accepted.

Where are you SydneySE???? i presume Sydney.
i was born in Syndey many moons sgo.
I intend to send the car to QLD... where there are a lot more hills ... especiall along the Sunshine Coast.
here in Norfolk England ..... land is flat as a tack!!!!
R u going to the Lotus meeting at Easter ... at Surfers Paradise? .... i should be back there by then ..although the car wont ... it will be in transit

Thanks Alex

No Probs Alex.
I live in Paddington in Sydney (AND I'm married- to a lovely lady- rare in paddington if you know the area )

I'm thinking of going to the Lotus Event at Easter though I have a competing option of attending a friends wedding in Tuscany..... (I guess it depends on cashflow by that time of year..)

As for lotus building the car around the aircon- close.. but (based on my SE) the fan blower is easy to remove from the front boot/spare tire area. then you just need to remove front dash; once this is removed you can fit the evaporator from any number of vehicles (eg jap MR2 or GM holden commodore) and just adapt the linkages (wire rods) to operate the unit (also the the vacuum lines are easy).
