Where to buy a cheaper V8 complete clutch assembly?
Discussion
Sorry,
there is nothing but the OEM one available. Its an AP clutch but unfortunately AP wont sell it individually.
If you like you may remove your clutch assembly and look if the springs+plates are still in specs. The friction discs alone are available. We sell them for Euro 968,-
Cheers

I had a right "to-do" with a dealer last year who "offered" to do me the favour of replacing the clutch while the gearbox was off the car. I asked what the thickness of the friction plates was and was told ^mm. Now, new is 7mm and service limit is 5.75mm so I said yes. Got it home and the old plates (which I asked for out of interest) were 6.8mm The dealer said that they had to be measured fully assembled and that they looked worn out in any case. I sent the whole thing back to the factory and they measured the plates at 6.8mm but this dropped to 6.4 when the clutch was bolted together. The points are thus:
1. If worn out is 6mm and brand new is 7mm, could you really claim to see a difference ?
2. How does clamping it up make it thinner when it is material that is pretty hard ?
3. Perhaps we should get together and find an engineering shop which can rebuild the clutches and have him provide a service to the club. The sale of the clutch through Lotus at £1000 plus VAT is a rip off. The same clutch direct from AP would be about £500 as this is the price for the Ford splined version needed after the gearbox input shaft upgrade. I think the world of the factory and they have been very good to me. But £600 for letting the clutch go through their parts dept. That's just extortion and abuse of privelidge.
My wife, who is totally inept mechanically, summed it up. She pointed out that if you were to put a brand new clutch which had done 100 miles next to my 20,000 mile clutch, they would loo identical.
4. The reason eveyone needs a new clutch at 15,000 miles is that they abuse the clutch by holding the car on hills. I never do this and live in a flat area. I will be disappointed if I don't see $0,000 miles out of this clutch !

I am hoping for 30.000 ! Or more !!! The 15,000 is the figure quoted by the factory and is their experience. I am very respectful of clutches and find that this respect pays off. So convinced am I that my old clutch was not worn that I may put it back on the car when this one goes. Do the math ! The old clutch had done 20,000 and went from 7mm to 6.3 (on average) If worn out is 5.75mm then it stands to reason that the clutch had another12,000 or so left in it. That's two years at my mileage. PLEASE don't all shout at once ! I know that clutch wear is not neccessarily linear ! I feel quite disgruntled that one of the criteria for replacing my clutch was "It's done 20,000 and they only do 15,000 as a rule so it will go soon anyway" I hate being the victim of generalisations. In 5 years when this clutch has done 30,000, they will all deny any memory of this ! It may sound petty, but £1200 is a lot of anyone's money !
