Hi all
Had a problem with my V8 today.
Oil pressure needle started to fall into the red while sitting in traffic, the pressure comes back up during normal driving......Ie, Air flowing through the oil coolers.
Just backed into the garage & at idle, it fell back into the red & the oil warnining light came on.
Oil level is just under MAX?????
Any ideas or do i not sleep tonite!
Thanks in advance
I can't see why oil temperature (reference to air flow through coolers) should be relevant to your oil pressure warning. The order to check things, in order of cost implications, is
Faulty sender for the pressure light/guage
Faulty oil pump
Major engine problem
Hope you can get it sorted without too much $$$$.

The engine was rebuilt with every oil seal changed only a thousand miles away with new oil & filter & has been fine/oil tight.
Wind it up & it the pressure gets right up there, its just sitting at idle it drops in the red...................no other symptoms??
It could still be a DOA part/seal. Or it may be an issue where strict tolerances were not observed when the job was being done. I would bring it in and have everything checked, starting with the pump (in case it's dead or dying).

You need to get access to a mechanical oil pressure gauge and remove the oil pressure sensor and check the pressure asap. Mucking about with other tests is foolhardy if you indeed have low oil pressure...as it will be causing damage to your engine the more you run it. It is most likely that the pressure sensor is bad since you sound like you have normal pressure at higher rpms....but it is better to be safe than sorry. A mechanical oil pressure gauge can likely be bought at any local autoparts store, and most come with adapters for different thread sizes.
1. Remove oil pressure sender
2. Install mechanical oil pressure gauge
3. Read oil pressure at idle and various rpms.
4. If oil reading is normal, replace gauge sensor.
5. If oil pressure is below spec (I would imagine anything below 10 psi is bad...would have to check specs in manual for V8) shut off engine immediately- likely engine was not rebuilt correctly and have towed back to person who rebuilt the motor...they're responsible.

Hi, Thanks for the advice.
First port of call will be an oil/filter change.
Reason being, we put a new castrol OW-40 oil in from the rebuild & we think as its as thin as piss, its lost its viscosity after only a thousand odd miles.
If the pressure was low, on cold start up the hydrolic tappets would rattle like mad, but theres no sign of that, gone for a thicker valvoline oil this time round & will post the news soon.
You have to love a lotus dearly to be happy to spend all your spare money on when it goes wrong, which happens just after you paid out for the last thing that went wrong!!
I wouldnt have it any other way but it really defines the saying "Labour of love" !!
Hi All,
Please dont use that thin stuff. IMHO, everything that is lower than 50 is not really the correct stuff for the Esprit. Take a good fully synthetic (Mobil 1 or Castrol or other ... I prefer the Castrol 10W-60 !!) that at least is a xW-50 !!!!
Cheers
