Any one else seen it yet, front cover, bright yellow? The write up has no new information but one or two quotes that seem to indicate all is progressing well for an early 2008 launch. They reckon on 600, half the production, heading to the States. The 'artists impression' is reckoned to be close but as admitted in the article is reminiscent of the Gallardo. Better than the fat Elise pictured recently though.......

BTW, the Europa is also previewed. Lotus admit to spending time in these chat rooms (so watch what you say folks!) gauging opinion and are comfortable that Elise drivers don't like it, others do. As I said elsewhere, its a diffent niche and grows Lotus' market. I won't buy one, but thats OK. I am still saving for the new Esprit and if Europa revenue helps it get to market, thats fine by be me.

So how many more Robo Cop bodies do we have to see before they realize that a $250,000 Sports Car should look like a $250,000 Sportscar?

...but then again, Lotus designers seem to have a big woody for the Ford GT40 Kit Car Look.

Nothing like buying a new Lotus that looks like some Gomer and his Dad built it in the Garage as a Bonding Exercise.

You'll have to wait for the weekend from me - anyone out there scan it in sooner? In the meantime check out www.carmagazine.co.uk. Unfortunately its still showing the April cover (today, 5th April). I am sure it will switch to the May edition in the next few days.

It's weird, there hasn't been pictures of a single new car in the last month or two without at least one person posting "It's ****, it looks like a kit car, I hate it". Ferrari, Noble, Audi, Lotus, they've all been slagged off.

Have you guys not got something constructive to say?

Oh, Yeah!....well, Ummm....Ummm....I do like how Ferrari Showcases their Motor under Glass!

There!...See!

...But then again, the Front Bumper looks like it was designed by the same Retard that did the Bat Mobile!

DAMN!...You're Right!...You Win!

'fraid not. There's so many new low volume sports cars coming on the market at present it's hard to see where Lotus are going to find a slot for a new Esprit. IMO the biggest challenges come from Cayman and Noble which both set a very high standard (in different ways) at not too high a price point. A bit more expensive and you're smack into Aston V8, Porsche 911 and Corvette Z06 territory. More expensive still and you have to take on F430 and Gallardo. Tough call. It's easy to forget the old Esprit only sold in small numbers, taking 30 years to sell 10,000 cars - averaging only one car per day over that period!

Believe me; I desperately want to see a world-beating new Esprit. Big challenge though.

The Vette Z06 is $65,000...the Dealers are gouging the extra 15 to $20K.

Also, LEW's news page:

I think it looks great. Some gallardo-esque shapes, which is great - i love the gallardo

A Volkswagen Beetle on Steroids...

I can just see the commercial with the German guy and his female assistant, wearing the Lab Jackets and standing beside the Tuner with the Big Hood Scoop...

Her: "What is it?"
Him: "Its a Lotus"
Her: "What does it do?"
Him: "It Sucks!"

looks awful, but there's a lot of people who like that trendy(quickly outdated) styling. lotus could shift a few on the ignorant public, but it would have to be half the cost of a gallardo. even an idiot would buy the lamborghini over a poor lamborghini copy.

Looks basically OK, but the strange semi-circular front end looks really weird.
The best thing about it is that it shows that the 'Esprit' pictures the other mags ran the other week, were after all of the S3 Elise/Exige just like everyone thought on here.
Why do established magazines print such bullshit as the gospel truth, don't they ever check these stories out?
So, I'm looking forward to the S3 Elise/Exige very much if it looks like the Orange pics from Auto Express. Very nice progression from the current model.
In the meantime the Europa will be a disaster, and the jury's out on the real next Esprit. As someone has noted, why make a Lambo copy unless it's half the price.

Regardless of opinion as to the "look" of this design... One thing is for sure.
Nobody - anywhere - will see this and say OOOO look, an Esprit!

Like so many before, this design is simply not "Esprit like" enough to turn the Lotus fan heads. Elise was new. So, new design flys. What if the Elise had been badged as the "New Elan"?... well, from the marketing stand point... about the same thing that did happen to the Elan. A few bought it. I would not bash it. But more than a few Lotus fans (yes some with money) could not be sold on the idea that the car was an Elan. The MX-5 on the other hand... not only pulled off the Elan look, but sold some cars to people "waiting" for the new Elan that did not go for it.

Anyone can "see" the Esprit in the S cars. Very different from the G cars, but not so much - when side by side they both look like Esprits. This design fails terribly in that department. IF (if) this is the real design... it will have a short run at popularity from new Lotus buyers, but it will not stand the test of time anymore than the "new" NSX did.

Drive topless!!!

Reliable sources have indicated that this picture has nothing to do
with the new Esprit.

all of the recent prototypes feature the same wheel styling. i wonder if that's the new standard look for lotus. is that an original design, or has that been done before?

THIS IS AN EXERCISE BY DESIGNERS AT CAR WITH FREE TIME ON THEIR HANDS

exactly the bloody same as Autocar and Autoexpresses ideas. Has toss all to do with Lotus and is probably based on some patent application or something. No doubt Lotus are pleased t see em so they generate interest on forums and provide free customer feedback!

Personally I REALLY liked the mock-up in Autocar (described as fat elise i believe). looks family based, and asuming is appropriately low and wide would be the nuts! personal view only.
