After doing alot of research, I finally decided this was the car for me, and bought a US spec 86 Turbo. Stock, it is as good or better as my Corvette was stock. I have seen many tricked out with adjustable suspensions, widebody kits, engine mods, etc. Where can most of these parts be found? Does anyone have any recommendations? I'd like to go autocrossing.

I've had a great time with my Esprit for the last few months, now I'd like to put some effort into it. You all seem like knowledgeable people. Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

Congratulations on the new toy!! There are many mods you can make to an Esprit, some very simple and inexpensive, some really necessary. Where are you located? Consider joining your local Lotus Club, these guys are a wealth of information.

Also, make a coutesy call and introduce yourself to Ken Davis from Dave Bean Ltd. and Jeff Robinson at JAE - independent Lotus parts specialists. They are a wealth of information about these cars and have helped me out tremendously throughout the years. Steve Roberts, of SJSportscars (lotus parts - specializing in Esprits) in the UK is also a great guy, very knowledgeable and customer focused. Tell them all I said "Hi"...

I'd be happy to help wherever I can, our cars are very similar and I have rebuilt both carb'd and injected models - both engine and drivetrain. I completed a total engine/tranny/brake rebuild on my '85 this past summer and took 1st place in the concours at the annual Lotus Owner's Gathering - LOG22 held this past fall in Wisconsin. Feel free to write me offlist with any questions you may have...Jim '85TE (Mid-Year)

You too can have one for a few low monthly payments. Only trouble is that they never end for some people.

How do you mean a few low monthly payments?

LOL @ Childofthecorn - I feel the very same way! LOL

I know I will have one, if plans go right, i hope to have a garage of different Lotus's, but I will settle for just one. Im not asking much, just an Esprit SE Turbo is all. Its just a matter of time, time being a few years.

I would say for an 85-93 Esprit you will pay $300-500 USD per month. Plus the cost of insurance. About the same as many cars that one can buy. A new Toyota Camray is in this range, what would you rather drive? People always tell me "Hey I always wanted on of these" I tell them no you didn't or you did not want one bad enough. There is always a way to get one if you wanted on bad enough. You will have to sacrifice or give up things to get one. Get a second job if you have too. I had many Lotus sports cars (3) in my early 20's. I did not do many of the things that others did around me that used up their funds. On the other hand as I look back they did not have the pleasure of owing and driving such cars either. It comes down to what you are prepared to do to aquire what you want in life. Either find a way to join us owners or be one of the people at the car show with kids in tow and telling me "Hey I always wanted one of these". BTW I have kids, a house, a few cars, and a few other toys. But the last vacation I took other than last years LOG was many years ago (maybe over 8 years). My neighbors takes vacations every year, likes to go out a lot, his wife buys a lot of things for the house. They have very nice memories of their vacations, I have my car. It's all about where you want to spend your money.

Thats cool. I will definately get one, I have too. But right now I cant sacrifice. I am only 21 anyways, I have a few years to get one. I plan on moving to Florida from NY or to Cali, and buy my own condo, after that I will attain my Esprit. Atleast, thats the plan I have had for last year. And the move is taking place by the end of this year so....

But how much is insurance sa for a S4 or an SE Turbo? If I get an Esprit before 25 years of age it is going under my parents name. Where would you even go in the USA to get the BEST insurande rates and coverage. I wouldnt get theft because it would never be out of my site. I would only get liability, fire and collision. Also, I know most of these insurance companies for a Lotus or any exotic have limited miles. How would they even know how many miles you are putting on? Plus, when I have my Esprit, I want to drive it, not let it sit and put only 2,000 miles on it a year. Id probably put like 10K a year on it, especially living in Florida.
And then I have to factor in the thing is gonna break every month or two so...

"fire" and "theft" are not discreet options. They all fall under "comprehensive" - damage not resulting from a collision.

FWIW, I think total cost of ownership over 2 years for my S4s (maintenance, repair, insurance in NJ, guessing at depreciation) works out to a tick over US$500/mo.

You live in NJ? Whereabouts if I might ask? So your saying $500 a month INCLUDING the maintenance/repair. In actuality it is less for insurance, but you factored in the repairs and what not?

Oh sorry just gave my spare Esprit away to some poor deserving car enhusiuast just this last week.

But you know what? I am going to visit my friend Keen Young who working on his favorite Esprit this week. His wife does not like all these Esprit's in her drive way. I would say he has 3 Esprit's and his wife would probably let you have the one he uses the least and if you begged and pleaded if you promised to pick it immediately. A little bit of cosmetic help and it could be a very nice car.

thank you for all the advice. I'm currently using my Esprit as an everyday car, and as soon as I get a chance to have her off the road for a while, I'm going to get serious with modifications. Good luck to all of you finding that perfect Esprit!

Thats a nice idea but all Keen's cars are LHD, and living in England I'd like a RHD one, but I guess beggers can't be choosers.... anyone know what his wifes favourite flowers are?

(on a serious note, I came across Keen's site the other week but I didn't save it so does anyone know the address of his site? and has it been updated recently? because from what I remember it hadn't been updated for a while)
