Just thought I'd pose this one and see what people thought....

The 'new' Esprit. What are your views on calling it that? It is going to be a completely different car, the only commanality will probably be the price bracket (adjusting for inflation) and roughly in the same performance league (adjusting for newer technology). Sort of.

So - it will deserve a new forum, a new breed of owner, a new name!

It worries me that the essence of the Europa is diluted by the new offering. It has nothing in common with the Europa of old. There are plenty of exciting names begining with E out there....so why rehash Europa or Esprit?

I like owning an Esprit. It still works its majik. Took a drive today and school kids waved and gave the thumbs up (not the finger!). How impressive is that for a car nearly thirty years old?

Call a new car a Lotus Esprit and it will have the public wondering...the new owners will be proudly stating 'oh, it's the new one...lots different from the old...' and old owners will be stating that the traditional Esprit is 'the one'. Which we all know to be true anyway!

Hey, and before anybody takes me to task...must mention that I did own an Elise too for three months until some nunty in a Megane pulled out in front of it. So - I believe in change and progress. Just think that some bits of heritage should be treat with respect and left alone.

Comments?????

I agree with you completely.

The Esprit has come, evolved, and gone. I wish Lotus Cars every success with the new car, but I do not think it should have the name Esprit, nor should it try to mimick the lines of the Esprit.

With retro-fashion being common today (the Mini, the Ford GT, the new Miura, the American new Camaro, Mustang, and Charger), it suggests to me that designers are not creative and are merely taking older designs and turning them into cartoonlike caricatures.
