Hi all..
Finally I have got it together and are going to UK to buy my first Esprit. I'm looking at 3 cars but the one I'm really set on needs to get the waterpump replaced. So, is this a big job, I would really like to drive it back instead of towing a trailor through half a continent. Thanks in advance

Mikael,

I hate to burst your bubble, but if the waterpump requires replacement, it is a pretty big job. First, a replacement pump, at least here in the States is about $600USD, a considerable expense. Rebuild kits, such as that I used, are available for about $150-$175USD and are quite adequate.
The waterpump 'lives' on the front of the engine up against the firewall and is attached using 6 bolts. Access is extremely limited and you must usually remove the aux. shaft pulley to get a wrench on the single bolt which 'lives' under it. This means loosening the timing belt at least and removing it at most. In addition, all other 'V' belts have to come off so you must loosen the vacuum pump, AC compressor and alternator and bracket. Given the limited access and such, plan on it being at least an 8 hour job, perhaps 10. Having done it 3 times now (on separate cars) I could probably do it in about 6 hrs.

Perhaps you can use this as a negotiating tool and negotiate sufficient discount to allow the pump to be serviced at a shop, but I would expect at least a $750-$1,000USD discountto sway me and assure that all the expenses are covered. Hope this helps...Jim '85TE
