Jim,
Continue to post on the site and take no offense at the designations. I don't see the designation today. Too bad, I think they were fun, told the status of who was posting and perhaps an indication their credibility. You may have percieved reasons in your own mind, but it's too bad you over reacted. I have grown up with and have many friends from the UK. They are a decent and polite lot, many times more decent and polite than people from the USA. Being from the USA sometimes the slangs they use are different but are not meant to be offensive, at least not to me anyways and the Gassbag designation was not meant to be. At least Petrol Ted does not mean it that way. I too can be classified a gassbag, I don't mind being called that after all this particular forum is called Gassing. We have something here that the other list does not have an active moderator (Petrol Ted) He will move to stop things too off topic or or just plain offensive. To tell you the truth I much prefer an active moderated site for just such a reason to keep the topic on our hobby, cars. I don't think you would mind if a person said "Jim can go on for hours talking about cars" So in this aspect both of us are Gassbags. Just remeber this is a UK/European hosted site that we have joined and we as American guests must learn, adapt, and follow the slangs/protocols of our hosts not the other way around. If not, you could choose to not visit the site which would be loss to both you and the other readers of the gassing forum. So Jim let's have fun on this site. Oh, to all others out there Jim and I are great friends. A week or so ago I have nominated him to be president of our local Lotus club in the comming elections . The Gassbag comment to him would have taken on a much a lighter tone if I told it to him in person.
Regards and Happy Holidays,
Calvin

In all my rantings I forgot to apologize to Jim that I offended him. I am also sorry for causing such a controvery on the forum which caused an end to the nicknames. Everyone, please do not think to badly of us.

I've read the subject of this post and felt I had to put in my two pence. I met Calvin and Jim for the first time at LOG 22 and both are experienced in Lotus knowledge. As a professional tech, and the questions asked, some are very difficult to explain to those with limited mechanical knowledge and we do our best to explain EVERY detail so nothing is missed. Sometimes it can be drawn out to explain detail to prevent those who wish to take on tasks beyond their knowledge and prevent them from causing serious damage. My point is... if you don't know what you are doing, realize it or seek help from others doing repairs up TO your personal abilities. Everyone sometimes has a different point of view and thats what makes this list unique. I help when I can, keep my trap shut when I cannot, but rely on my friends for good sound advice.
Jim and Calvin, whatever the difference, please continue to help those in need... only if I knew it all... but I don't! I guess putting up this post makes me a " gassing" person, but this is " a gassing station "

Calvin,

There is absolutely no need for you to apologize for anything. So, while I do appreciate your friendship in offering one, I will not accept your apology. I just called you on your post regarding the monikers being used. And, as I stated at that time, I still very much value your friendship. I hope we will remain friends for a long time to come.

It may interest you to know that I received numerous emails regarding my post. These spanned a range of opinions from very supportive messages to openly hostile admonishments, and some which I can only believe are the product of 'Internet Time in the Asylum'. The majority of messages were however, overwhelmingly supportive of my position, or my right to state it.

No one can say why one person may be offended by something while others take no offense at all. Most disturbing to me was the fact that these 'monikers' were assigned without my foreknowledge or consent. It was very encouraging to me that most people understood that I was truly offended and sympathised with my point of view in that regard.

Admirably, Dave Edmonston (a.k.a. - Uncle Ted??), took my concern to heart and apologized to me, both on and off the list. I am thankful to Dave for his generous, caring concern. Dave also took action to remove the offense. Dave did this, I might add, in the face of some strong criticism by others who expressed that, should I not like it, I was free to leave the list.

This of course was, and is, very true. But, Dave and others, including yourself, realized that the individual is far more deserving, and necessary to the well-being of this list, than to be shrugged off so hastily.

So, Calvin, to you, Dave Edmonston, and all the others who at least attempted to understand and support my position, a heartfelt Thank You.

To those others who could neither accept or understand my point of view, I respect and support your right to be heard as well...Jim '85TE
