What sort of foil did Lotus use for the heat shield backing on the engine covers? Looking at the old stuff it looks like the kitchen variety being very thin and flimsy...? If so what is it stuck down with, that will keep sticking under a bit of heat.

Cheers

Lotus use a basic aluminum foil which they have an adhesive spray or brush on... a real to get off by the way. I removed all of the foil from the front end when I replaced the radiator with an upgraded one and also the rear removable boot section. I used a gold foil film from an aerospace company named Mexmil. This stuff is very nice. It is based on a thin fiberglass mat with silver foil and then gold-plated. It also has an acrylic adhesive and removable backing. You cut it and fit it, then peel off the backing and stick it on, done. I did this about 18 months ago and have put over 20K miles on the car since in south Florida heat.... it's still flawless. Link is:

It's listed under Parts/thermal protection

Looks fantastic and just what I need mmmm will they ship to NZ, lets hope so. How much do you have to order as minimum qty. Or how much did you need to cover yours? Says each roll is 27x10"

I used self adhesive foil, sold as a roll of tape for sealing home heating ducts at a local hardware store (no it's not like the grey duct tape). $3 per roll.

that foil is ugly and not necessary. i hated looking at all those haphazard seams, which only get accentuated with the attracted grime. mine has been unfoiled for 9 months and with no ill effects.

I bought one roll... did the entire front end above the radiator and the full rear boot insert and still had some left over. In fact you should be able to handle the engine cover with the remainder.

OK thanks all. I think I would rather have one sheet or two sheets with one neat seam to cover it. I may need the foil tape anyway to seal the edges or any small areas needing more attention. Love the gold sheet foil though, thats a class act ! In my money thats a massive $500.0 for a roll!
