Unfortunately, the widget used to ensure perpendicular incidence of the cable on the latch caused too acute an angle between the cable and the car body where the cable is attached to the car body by a small cable clip. The solution was to make a small "C" shaped clip to anchor the cable nearer to the centre of the car so that the angle between the cable and the car body between the clip and the widget is much smaller. Did that make sense ? Have a look at the picture of the wuidget in place You can see the cable being pulled away from the last cable clip.
