Why didn't Lotus put a door in the engine bulhead. It wouldn't need to be big or compromise rigidity. One small hatch on each side opposite the cambelt tensioners would be absolutely fine. Cambelt tension and replacement would be a doddle and fan belt changes, PAS pump change etc would be dead easy. After all, it's only a bit of wood !!

I don't think it's too difficult on an 89SE...
Easier than many Japanese cars with stuffed engine bays.

i did have the same thought. you could even bolt in a steel frame around the access flap, making the bulkhead stiffer if anything. problem is, it;s quite an ordeal removing the seats, etc. in getting to the bulkhead. my arms are long and skinny enough to do all the work from underneath. however, it was extra diffficult the first time due to hardware that had rusted into place. next time will require less leverage, because i paid the extra 98 cents for proper stainless steel bolts, which lotus decided was too precious for us.

Rust? What's that?

Only thing rusty on my Esprit were the fuel tanks.

No other rust at all.
