Been having shakedown runs since major work and everything ok apart form a small water leak and fuel leak when full. Filled up with Optimax and car seemed ok. Had to buy "ordinary" fuel and all seemed ok. Went to "entheusiastically overtake" someone the other day and check engine light came on. No loss of performance though. Code is 43 "electronic spark circuit" which seems to relate to the knock sensor.

Is this likely to be a failed knock sensor or from changing fuels, which I think would be unlikely as it should re-learn?

No laptop at the mo so cannot run freescan.

Thoughts please.

Depending on the fuel you used the knock sensor may have detected a spike in the increase of kniocking if lower octane fuel has been used. If you intend to continue using lower octanne fuel reset the computer and drive it in learn mode for a while to aquire new settings. My Esprit did not like it when I bumped down in octane during a cross country trip. Only when the offending fuel was used up and refilled with the fuel it learned on did the check engine light not come on. It usually only came on during robust driving at higher rpm and speeds. Sometimes pumping the pedal forcing more fuel would also make the light go out. Make sure your fuel system is closed, our cars do not like to run with an open system like if one of the vent hoses has cracked or disconnected.

Code 43 will be set if the knock sensor, ECM, mem-cal, or its wiring is faulty, changing fuel can not and will not cause this error.

Check the wiring between the ECM and the engine, check the engine's ground connection.
Check that your using the correct mem-cal in the ECM and it's installed properly.
After that, replace the knock sensor.
