I've got this annoying clicking noise that has started a few days ago. It seems to be coming from the left hand wheel as I can hear it with the left hand window open but not with the right.

It's linked with road speed.

Oddly it takes about 5 miles before it'll start doing it

You also have to have a small amount of load on the engine to make it do it, this can happen by either lightly pressing the throttle, or letting the car overrun. If you stick it in neutral or put your foot on the clucth it stops, likewise if you accelerate it wont do it either.

Suggestions anyone???

I'm guessing mayb CV joint, I had the boot floor up the other night and regreased the 2 inner joints but that made no difference. Tomorrow I'm gonna jack her up and remove the wheel and have a look.

She's n MY2000 v8

Thanx, Col

Col - in 50k miles i've not had any problems with cv joints, but i have replaced a few wheel bearings. Might be worth a look?

Yeah, kinda inclined to agree you on the CV joints - I've been searching all the forums and have not found one mention of "my CV joint ......" which implies they don't go - guess there had to be something on her built to last

I have heard of snapping the CV joints on V8 cars modded a bit and with some sticky tires when one does a drag launch. Haven't hear of other issues like they wear out fast. I suggest looking at the bearing first too.

I had a TVR (Ford) wheel bearing that did this: it turned out to be a fragment of the outer race that had fractured out and got in amongst the balls...

Hi Marcus, I got me Lambda's and me Ally today, just waiting on the Cats now - thankyou v. much

As far as concerns the torque, I never have however, I checked it and there's no movement in there.

Do you know what torque setting should it be?

Another question, what should the grease be like in the CV joints, as there is a fair bit of movement in both of them, when I took the boot off the grease poored and had the consistency of oil I've rammed Lithium based high temperature grease in there, but sadly it has made no difference

Thanx for you input guys

Hi Colin,
The nut gets torqued fairly high (=270Nm =200 lbf.ft.) ... just retorque them as tight as you can.
These rear hub nuts actually like to undo themself quite regularly. Pleae recheck that ASAP !

For the grease you should "ram" 140g in there. Lotus does not specify a special grease ... they just call it "grease" ;o) In the workshop manual Section FG, page 19 there is written "Spread the sachet of grease (140g) into the joint and around the inside of the gaiter ..."

I´m sure that a good Lithium high temperature grease is fine.

Marcus

PS: Your cats will arrive very soon ... I´m sure

my torque wrench goes up to 150

Anyway, finks you could be on to something. It took 1/8 turn to bring it up to 150, I've then put a bar on it and gone a little further. I wont know untill tomoz if it's done anything as it's feckin cold out there.

I'll let you know .....

lol

Still no clicky, it's defo fixed This morning I even give the fat kid the finger as I drove past now that I have my antimagic cloak that protects me from his 'car clicky magic dust' that he throws over me as I drive past

I'm just totally stunned that after all my messing about, shouting at it, even hugging it all that needed was a bolt to be tightened

Colin,
Maybe you should give the fat kid a short ride tomorrow ... or did I misinterpret the "finger-thing" ... I assumed it was your thumb ... or was it one of the fingers in the middle of your hand ????? If so you´re definitely a bad boy ;o)

Colin,
Do you think that Esprit drivers waving around with their middle finger pointing upwards to fat kids are a good reputation ...... ? What should that poor fatty kid think about people that are driving cars like this ?

Next time you are about to pass him, please stop, be friendly, show him your car and tell him that he will never fit in one like this if he continues getting fatter and fatter ....

Aren´t we a human, friendly, loving crowd ?

Marcus

PS: Don´t take me too serious today ... I feel I picked up something strange last night ...

I have the same noise. I thought it was my vacuum pump crapping out because now I can't control my vent selection for heat. I have a 99. I took it to a couple of track days this year so I wouldn't be suprised if something loosened up. What exactly did you retorque?

My ticking noise comes on after 5 mins and seems to go away once the car has been run for 20-30mins. The noise is constant and doesn't vary with engine RPM. It does go away with the clutch in like yours. It sometimes takes a certain load around 3000 rpm to get it to act up. Let off on the gas and it sometimes goes away. I hope my fix is as easy as yours.

Thanks
Eric

Hi All
I have an S4s and i had a 'clicky' problem that niggled the hell out of me ,i did all the usual checks expecting the worse (as you do),and my fix was quite cheap and really simple ,it turned out the wheel bolt covers on my OZs were 'creaking' as i drove along just the same noise as you have described,so whipped off covers quick drive and hey bloody presto no clicky noise ,so out came the RTV and i set bolt covers in RTV and now nice and silent.
Worth a try !

Mine's since come back

I mostly suspect the wheel bearing, I've tried taking it off so that I can take a look at it to see what state it's in but it seems totally welded to the hub carrier

Sorted

It was indeed the bearing, changed it last night. I've just come back from a good 20 mile run with her and no annoying noise at all.
