Hope someone will record it and find a way to link it so those of us who do not get "Top Gear" can see it.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,

All the Top Gear videos (200mph Esprit) can be found on the 'Lotus Esprit World' Website.

Next Mondays episode should be on the website later next week.

It was quite a long piece and not sure LEW's bandwidth can handle it being downloaded by loads of people. We are already running up huge costs due to how popular the site is.

If there's time we will use a company's FTP site and load it there for downloading.

As for the programme. The Esprit is overshadowed by the complete idiots running the project. Absolutely clueless! Some nice visuals, but overall a complete waste of money by the productors.

Worth watching though!

p.s. It's now available for downloading. See LEW's news page for more info.

I saw the programme - and agree, it's a good job the Fifth Gear team don't orgsanise p*ss ups in breweries as a living

The V8 they bought (for around £23,000) broke down within 5 miles of buying it - gearbox issues - they then proceeding to spend around £10,000 on getting the car ready for it's 200mph challenge - fitting a roll cage, adding intercoolers, reconditionned and uprated gear box, new clutch after goosing the original etc, taking it to a wind tunnel and removing un-aerodynamic bits to reduce drag (interestingly this including removing the GT style wrap around rear spoiler, which they said introduced more drag than down force), taping up various front end holes etc in the front air dam, removing wing mirrors etc.

They still failed to get the car to reach it's manufacturers original top speed (circa 180 mph) - they kept blaming the Lotus, but maybe should have started with a fabulous example rather than try with a below par example , buying the first one they saw

Tiff Needell should have asked Pistonheads for some buying tips first........

Hi All,
This 5th gear program is just a shame ...

A handful completely incompetent idiots ruining an Esprit and trying to get to 200mph ....

A good stock V8 + Red ECU + freeflow intake and exhaust will get very close to 200mph without all this aerodynamic BS ... What this morons did is just making an otherwise good design worse ... ending up with lower performance than stock.

This movie is simply not worth the long download time (75MB)

Marcus

PS: Sorry, just had to vent.

Well it was good to see the esprit on tv as it looks like its doing 200mph whilst parked up & although the cossie done the 200...its still a 4 door sierra!
as a v8 owner, I could have cried when they drilled into the boot lid & bolted a perspex sheet to it............further more how can the engine vent with that thing on it? then nitrous?........Thats like someone taping your mouth & nose up & then forcing you to run a marathon isnt it? no wonder it cooked up.

I reckon whoever picked the car up when they bought it got drunk on the power and as it wasnt his probably dumped the clutch at every junction, hence doing the box.
And in the time of development whos to say whoever had it at the time wasnt ripping the shit out of it at every opportunity as the repair bill wasnt theirs to pay??
Badly managed job but somehow the car still came out a winner, anyone in the know, knows its still one of the fastest things on the planet in standard trim without perspex, duck tape,or the wizards of noz to mess things up.

I didn't see anything to suggest that, and the people involved would have had a strong incentive not to knacker it. I suspect they just found out the hard way that trying to get substantial power increases on the cheap is a gamble, and this time it didn't pay off.

What would you see to suggest that, the producers werent watching the car 24-7 were they?

I'm just stating that when something doesnt belong to you personally you dont treat it with the same respect, so whats to say it wasnt abused during its development as well as poorly managed, my faith in them respecting the car went away when i watched an 18volt dewalt cordless drill bit in the boot lid

I wasn't there so I don't know for sure. Personally I treat things left in my care better than I treat my own things, and the professionals who have worked on my car appear to treat it well too. In any case the professionals on that project have a strong incentive to help the project succeed, and ragging the hell out of the car isn't exactly going to help is it? If you left your car at KwikFit I could imagine some oik who's never had a chance to drive a similar car (and probably never will again) taking it for a thrash when your back's turned. But these guys work with high performance cars all the time, why would they be bothering with joy rides? Just does't seem likely to me. More likely it was in poor mechanical shape before they started and the tranmission just wasn't up to the power they were putting through it.

Fair comment but the transmission failed prior to mod's so there is a fair chance someone from the production team gave it some serious stick. either way we know its a weak point with or without mods.
Just a shame they didnt consult the experts such as p.u.k and or lew who would have pointed them in the right direction!

Other than the AVI and MPEG videos, I am having huge problems viewing the MOV videos. Apparently DIVX will not decode on Quicktime for Windows (even Pro - which I have), so the DIVX encoded MOV files are useless without a MAC (unless somebody has some neat trick they would like to share).

I use Mplayer for DivX stuff. It's an open source video player and does better than QuickTime in most cases. http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/
