Teaching your ECU - Best way?

After you have had your battery disconnected for some time, and the time comes to bring your car back to life, what's the best way to get the ECU up to speed?

I seem to remember a procedure about "Starting the car, letting it idle until the fans have cut in and out 3 times then go for a normal run then fast run."

I have searched but not found a guide to teching your ECU. I thought it was on Andy Whittakers page but if it is I cannot see it.

Any info?
