Has anyone had any experience with Heat Exchanger type Oil Coolers such as the Setrab Tube Style.

I am planning on mounting it on the Frame Section in front of Rack & Pinion and directly behind the Radiator.

Any thoughts?

Never used the Setrab make but have used the Laminova water to oil cooler, with the oil side split 75/25 (75 %of volume for engine oil, 25% of volume for transmission). Fantastic little units, very compact.

Would have no idea about moiunting it in an esprit though.

I have used Setrab oil coolers with success on some of my cars and we use them at work too for a couple of oil cooler applications. The OEM oil cooler on the Esprit S1 may not be a Setrab but I used a Setrab as a direct bolt in replacement for one. It worked just fine.

I'm about to find out...it'll be here tomorrow.

The problem occured when I retro'd an S4s motor into an 86 and added the combined Charge Cooler Radiator/Air Conditioning Condenser....there wasn't any room left for the Oil Cooler.

So hopefully the solution is adding the Water Cooled Oil Cooler.

Hi decee,
I suppose the water cooled oil-cooler is fed via water-coolant from the front radiator, right ?

I´m afraid this will not have enough cooling effect because the water may be too hot there. Maybe I´m wrong here, but the delta-T (temperature difference between T1 and T2 is too close)
Maybe you will end up with a higher oil temp than usual.

On the other side it will be a good thing to heat up the oil during the warm um phase

Toyota MR2's use a setup like this. Water from the radiator exit flows through a heat exchanger tube with the engine oil and cools it. They also only cool the excess oil from the pump, that is, the overpressure from the pump goes through the heat exchanger then back to the sump.

The problem was that even the stock S4s Oil Coolers were too small to meet the demands of the motor when it is being run in the Desert...as this one will be.

Both Setrab and the local racers are saying that this setup is not only Not a compromise, but is actually preferred in Mid Engined applications when the front nose area is minimal or closed in.

Personally, I hadn't heard of these Heat Exchanger Oil Coolers before this problem arose, but I understand that it's used by Ferrari, as well as all the F1 Teams
so I thought that I would give it a try.
