Hello guys,

Apart from the double clutch, what else do I need to watch out for?

Also, any improvements in the later box?

Kind regards,

Mark

I suspect they are almost identical.

The UN1-027 has a different 5th gear ratio which should improve gas economy (when in 5th of course) and uses a different shifter and associated linkage (started in 1998MY) that does not use a translator. I suspect you can use an older rear gearbox housing.

The 96 would be the Low Torque Version, whereas the 99 would be the High Torque Version.

I understand the diference has to do with additional Heat Treating which make the box capable of handling the additional power, hence the twin clutches.

Either that or change the shifter cables.

Come to think of it, Ralph Stechow put a 6 speed Renault box (with '97-style linkage) into Billy Zissis' V8 some years ago and he did NOT swap the rear housing but changed cables instead. I don't know if it was a custom housing for the 6 speed or not.

I still regret missing out on that one!

It's not just the shifter cables. Starting 1998MY the shifter itself was redesigned to provide true independant cable action, ie, one cable to transmit fore/aft shifter movement and one cable to transmit lateral shifter movement. This along with the revised rear housing for the gearbox eliminates the need for the translator and additional linkage in the previous design.

Has anyone found a way to make the Shifter with the Translator feel more precise?

If you haven't done so, the short shift conversion has somewhat that effect. In addition to shortening the lever throw it also makes it tighter.

This involves attaching the shift cables to the top of the translator instead of the bottom. Some people like the different feel but some do not. Personally I like it.

Not sure how this relates to the older models with the translator on the left of the tranny as mine is on the right but I think it applies.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks, but I've already done that.

It still feels mushy and I often miss shifts.

Have you gone through the existing linkage looking for wear? Get your helper to wiggle the shifter around real slow, then go over every piece of your existing linkage looking for play. Look under the shifter boot too.

Thanks for the replies guys!!

I have been advised that to fit this to my 1996 (becasue of the early gearshift lever) the rear cover will have to be changed over from the old 'box' - anyone confirm this?

That is correct, as well as the translator and associated linkage.
