G'day All
....after 17 years ,the speakers in my Gcar...have just about had the day .... hence need new ones

Purchased 4 4" dual cones...simple enough ...

Fitting the rear speakers ...seem simple enough ....
1.they came out easy
so will go back easy .
After i go to a pet store and buy some polyester batting ..( a previous thread by Lotusguy circa 2003/4)

Now my problem ......indeed i hope it wont be.....
How does one take out the front speakers? ......
The passenger side seems to have heaps of room
Drivers side ..not that easy ... looks to be pig to do!!!!!!!!
Er ..does one have to take 1/2 the car apart to take out the speakers ......

Many thanks for your replies ...
Monday off for me tomorrow...so a play with the car

I've got Good News and I've got Bad News....

The Bad News is that the Pod had to be removed.

The Goods News is...well, there isn't really any Good News...

I was going to say that I have no G car experience, but on my 89 non-SE, removing the instrument pod looks to be the way to get to that. On my car, it is like 4 bolts and a couple of connectors and off it comes.

The Passenger side (US) is not bad, the Driver side is a B&*#ch. But do able. Just use a small #2 tipped screwdriver.

I used one that was about 1 1/2" long with the handle. It's called a fingertip screwdriver and hope the screws aren't on too tight.

Didn't have to pull the pod but was not fun. Besure to put in a good ploy (not paper) cone speaker because you don't want to do it again.

first: remove the gearbox, engine and all the plumbing.

second: remove left hand rear wheel and all the exhaust pipe.

third: remove the brake master cylinder and jack the car up on the left to expose the rr brake disc

fourth: slide effortlessly under the steering wheel and position yourself face up to the air conditioning pipes. remove these if they poke up your nose.

fifth: and finally pull all you hair out...

Hope this helps.

Had the same problem in my 87 G-type. Passenger side: There is a large plastic sleeve (the same size as the speaker) that screws onto the speaker housing from the bottom. You will feel it w/your hand under the dash; turn counter-clockwise.

For the driver's side, I gave up, unplugged the speaker, plugged in my new one and secured the new one under the dash with plastic ties. Worked fine.

take of the steering wheel (19mm nut)
use 10 mm socket + extension bar on a rachet unbolt the binnacle! 4 bolts look between the bottom of the binicle and the lower dash you will just about see the binicle mounting brackets this will guide you to roughly where the bolts are under the dash. Put you hand up under the dash and guide the 10 mm socket and extension bar onto the bolts (some people go head first into the footwell and look up at the nuts but this is for contortionists)
I can now take of the binnacle in 10-15 mins from there access to the speaker is easy remounting the binnicle is not to bad either 3 connectors 1 pipe and the speedo cable the speedo is the toughest trying to get it lined up and screwed in again

I actually thought about replacing the speakers in front of the dash (seriously) and came to the conclusion that standing by the open driver door with one of those really short stumpy cross head screwdrivers and reaching in with my left arm while watching through the windscreen was the easiest option.
I suspect taking the binacle off would help lots too.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys....
A lot of interesting ways of getting around the front speaker problem...
So with ..new polyester batting (still to get)...to place behind the rear speakers..and install them

1. TURN ON CD PLAYER ...
2. LISTEN TO THE SOUND
3. HEAR THE IMPROVEMENT FROM THE REAR 1'S and the crap
out of the front ones
4.PROCEED WITH THE FRONT ONE'S
starting with the passenger side
5.AFTER THAT SIDE IS IN
6.PLAY CD ....
7.LISTEN TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE 3 OUT OF 4 speakers
8. ATTEMPT THE LAST "little bugger"
9. Either take the binni off
or
Disconnect old speaker
And attach new speaker ... via cable ties

This will be a "this weekend job".... as i cant see much more gardening can be done around house..nor washing up !!!!!!

Stay tuned (opps sorry about the pun)

Many thanks to all so far .... er other thoughts always recommended

PS:ANOTHER PROBLEM ... my power aerial dont go up or down .. never has since i got GCAR in 2002...
.. I have bought a new power aerial bought last year .. ready to go ..
I guess that is another Problem ... although seeing i am taking half the car apart to install speakers ... Could be the go , to do both at same time ...and have grazed knuckles .. aching back and shoulder etc etc

if you want to replace the antenna the easiest way would be just trade in for the same model but with a working antenna

Are you sure you don't have my car parked in your driveway? I've also got the dead antenna syndrome. Motor works, but antenna does not move. I'm looking for a radio w/some type of antenna built in.

On the speakers, if you gently pull the on/off/volume knob & turn, this will fade sound from front to back.

My antennae was dying when I bought my car. It would go up, but the motor would keep running, thunk-thunk-thunk.... If I pulled the fuse on it, then in typical Lucas fashion, the left front speaker stopped working. I replaced the radio with an Alpine and ran a wire up the A pillar and across the top under the padded head liner thing and use that as an antennae. Works OK. Not as good as the regular antennae on my Truck, but OK for a fiberglass car. New radio runs the left front speaker just fine with the antennae fuse pulled. Old radio I put in my Truck and it works fine in there. Go figger.

Hey Mark, you get that mail I sent you regarding Wally World oil? Only have the 75W140 full synthetic.

Go to a muffler shop and remove the muffler. Problem solved, you won't be able to hear anything except the exhaust and turbo whining. Better then any music you can play.

A beautiful sunny friday morning,,,,,,

May as well give the speakers a go .....seeing its such a beautiful day

I had my polyster batting for sound protection of rear speakers........
The rear speakers went in aok .... with the big test ...TURN CD ON
GREAT ..NO BAFFLES ...JUST GREAT

Now for the passenger front speaker...
After a little trouble ,the sleave came out with speaker ........no problem
Thou alas.........the speaker is different from the set i had bought !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a 3 1/2" one that fits in the circular sleave ..that is clipped in the speaker housing.

Being "a pain in the arse" OZ ,not afraid of asking any question i dont know,no matter how stupid it may sounds.

1.Can i buy a circular 3 1/2" speaker (with no screw point)?
2. If so ... how do i get it to clip into the housing ,with out breaking the clips or speaker
3. Do i just go out and buy a complete housing and speaker ?
4. do i just take out the old speaker ,, screw the sleave back on .. a with cable ties ... fit new speaker under the dash ???????

This could be a question for you .....JUDGEA ( seeing as you have already had this problem...and overcome it .

The drivers side front speaker......... IM NOT GOING THERE AT THE MOMENT!!!!

Im off to the pub ....
So by the time i wake Sat morning "bright eyed and bushy tail"
I will have a answer from all my learned gurus...
Many Thanks

As I recall...you need a 4" speakers (I went with MB Quart) and preferably ones that screw in from the face.

OK, if I understand, I had a similar problem. I cut the corners off the speaker I bought (metal bracket corners that had nothing to do with the speaker), then it fit right in the speaker bracket. I actually got the passenger side speaker in with no real problems. Hope this helps.

If you're interested...I did a Custom Sound System in my 86 that has MB Quart Component Speakers with Satelite mounted Tweeters on the A Pillars and a Custom Build Molded Cabinet that follows the Seat Contures and has a 9" JL Audio Subwoofer.

The only problem is that I'm clueless as to how to post the pictures.
