Okay... I have been trying to track down a noise I can best describe as whirrrring or maybe a rev-v-v-v-v-v-v?

Anyway. I thought this might be the vacume pump as the noise seemed to be from the front of the motor. Ran the car up on ramps and did some probing with a stethescope... the vacume pump seems fine with a slight clicking heard only when in contact with the pump...

Fuel pumps same way. You see, the sound "seems" to migrate and where I think it is, it is not...

To continue, I used the stethescope and contactacted the alternator, AC compressor, water pump, and that little wheel that is best described as between the AC compressor and the crank.... I still do not seem to be able to match the sound. It is still in my left ear as I contact any object with the scope in my right ear....

So... can anyone confirm that the cam belt tensioner might make this whirrrrring sound if it is crapping out? I plan to get the car up on a lift soon - will not drive it until then... and this part is impossible to reach w/out a lift. If in doubt replace is my motto... even though the tension feels correct even cold using the "twist" method. I'd sure like to know for sure what could make this sound that I have yet to find?

Thanks for any thoughts...

Maybe the fuel pump if it's on its way out? It makes a similar noise when it's hot only. Couldn't figure out what it was until it died on the freeway exit ramp, one lane, peak hour traffic... the story is somewhere here in the archives.

I replaced the 2ndary fuel pump a few months back due to the humming it was doing... and like I stated, the sound is ever present even when in direct contact with the all the fuel pumps.... This is def. higher up... Unfortunately!

I am going to try to get a lift this weekend. This car is actually not bad to work on if you can get it off the ground! She is due for a cam belt change anyway... an extra 60ish should replace the tensioner. I just do not trust it now...
I may locate the damn noise if I can get the car on a lift...

Check the rubber mounts on the fuel pumps....

Thank you for the replys. The fuel pumps check out as 'good'. The rubber mounts are in great shape... I have this "OCD" issue where I remove the rubber mounts and washers on my car and soak them in warm baby oil ( I lift up the tranny just a bit and get those every two years +/-). Then rub em' up with 2001. Keeps them new for years.

I did get to run the car up on the jack stands w/ a buddy Saturday and I crawled under while the motor was turning... This sound is def. coming from the front of the motor and I have not been able to "touch" the source yet.

A new tensioner bering is on the way as it is time to replace the V belts and cam belt anyway... If this is not the tensioner bering pre-seizing, then I hope I can find the issue as things get moved aside...
I will also be replacing the vacume pump as there is a good chance this is the issue...

Found the source of the "problem"!!!

Not the tensioner.... much worse.
The bolt holding the pully/cam gear on the aux. shaft seems to have "poped" off! This of course means that the rest of the bolt is stuck in the shaft and the gear wheel has slapping a bit. Lucky it did not skip time on the way home!!!

Anyway... I'll be tearing down the Aux shaft housing and replacing the shaft etc...

Glad you found the problem before it got worse.. Sounds like it could of been a major.

Def. could have been much worse!!!!
The woodruff key did its job and started to sheer... causing the unidentified sound... so the gear wheel did not go spinning unchecked. It will eventually as the key sheers totally off... I just quit driving and sorted out the sound. If the gear starts spinning free... the motor can/will jump time....Boom... new motor needed!!!

So, if you hear a strange sound from the front of the motor... check the aux. shaft gear!

I am taking advantage of this situation and cleaning, re-painting, and putting in new gaskets every place I can...
