Funny noise occasionally from the steering
Discussion
Hi guys,
I'm convinced my car's about to fall to pieces on me, my steering's groaning and I'm sure my clutch is begining to play silly beggars again
Occasionally, say once every couple of weeks or so I get a funny noise from the steering, it's difficult to explain but sounds kinda like someone blowing their nose
Each time it has happened it's been under the same conditions, that is moving forward full right hand lock, stop, then turning the wheel the other way whilst begining to reverse. It happens at the point when I'm turning the wheel the other way
Is this something I should be worrying about? Anything I should look for?

Cheers guys :)

Yes, the occassional grumble from the rack. I think it's due to the valving chattering from low hydraulic pressure (at idle). I'm not sure if it would be the belt however as the V8 uses a single serpentine belt for all auxillaries with an auto-tensioner. It is one very small pump however. Unless it starts leaking red stuff I wouldn't worry about it.

yeah, it's only happened when it's been on full lock and parking, never when driving
Oh yes, this is quite normal ... many cars do that, however its not too healthy for the hydraulic system ... what you hear is the pump working at full pressure against a locked/dead end.
Easiest (and IMHO the best) method to avoid this is not to turn the steering on full lock.

My Esprit V8 have the same symptom, the funny noise appear when the car steer at slow speed especially when the power steering reaches it's working temperature. Since this is a GM parts the same funny noise happen to my GM Opel Vetra too. There was a spring stopper on the steering rack just behind the pinion to hold steering rack in position. The stopper is rubbing against the rack when the steering move, funny noise will be heard because of the lack of grease. You can apply the grease by removing the 40mm lock nut of the spring stopper but this is not an easy job. I apply the grease to the rack by removing the dust cover on the driver side. Mine was fixed 6 months ago and the funny noise never come back.
