Well,

I've noticed some nasty rattling sounds in the rear again so decided to check the H-F cat pipes... they're shot again! First time they were on for 6K miles and the elements were so loose they were rolling around in the cases. They were repaired and have done about 3K miles this time and they are loose again, albeit not quite as bad as the first time.

The first time they went bad, Troy at Hyper-Flow said it was caused by overheating on the elements caused by oil contamination. Even now I can't find any traces of oil nor does the engine burn any. I do plan on contacting Troy on Monday, but at this point, I would strongly urge anyone contemplating such a purchase to hold off. I don't think others who have the H-F cats have put many miles on them and as such have probably not experienced any problems.

I'd love to sell them off but I do have a conscience... so I guess I'm stuck with them and out $2K. Live and learn.... knowledge and experience has it's price.

Hello Kylie,

Hyper-Flow did repair them under warranty the first they went south (6K miles and very loose) but commented that oil contamination was the cause and to look for the source. We'll see what they say the second time around... I just happened to check sooner this time at 3K miles.

My main concern lies in the fact that the stock OEM cats have close to 50K miles on them and are still in excellent shape and are back on the car once again. If there really was a problem with oil (which there isn't) I can't possibly see the OEM cats lasting this long.

Well understood. I have spoken to Troy from Hyper-Flow a few times, have swapped numerous emails and have been factual in my posts. Troy did fix them as previously noted, no problem. Two problems remain in any respect, that of being short compared to my stock cats and the poor fit at the exhaust end. Both of these were made known to H-F last year and their response was: they fit our jig perfectly, so they must be correct and second, we can't form the mating end to match the stock... so it is what it is.

Again, as I initially stated, I will be contacting H-F once the week starts and we'll see what they say. I do believe Troy at H-F is honest, well-intentioned and a nice guy but there are some problems with the final product.

Not really naming and shaming at this point as Kevin has stated that others have not had the problem. I would be interested to see what hyperflo has to say after you talk with them KM...

Have swapped email with Troy at Hyper-Flow... he wants to see them and hopefully determine the problem. To date they have made approximately 30 sets of cat pipes and most have been sold thru JAE who is now the sole distributor. He has not heard of any issues with the other sets... but nobody really knows how much driving the other sets are seeing either. I'll be sending them out in the next day or so and will keep the list upddated with findings.
