I cant get my head around this.

My 97 v8 doesent blow a puff of smoke even at high speed & between gear changes/overrun or when shes started.............Never

But, start her & just leave her running after about 5/7 mins she starts chuffing out white smoke, this gets fairly bad & doesnt seem to clear until you drive her????........Seconds later, not a sign of it.

I have been advised its not the turbos as they arent under load when the cars idling but it could be the valve guide oil seals?
Anybody had this before or know the cure.
The engines coming out in 2 weeks for a full inspection so any thoughts would be appreciated

Thankyou

Sounds to me like a coolant leak if you are getting white smoke, I'm no expert though, It sounds similair to what happened to a friends Fiat x19 years ago.

Oil seeping past the intake valves will do this. 4 cylinder motors don't have valve seals. I don't know about V8's. If they do, the seals are worn, if not, the valve stem to valve guide clearance may be a bit on the large side. Nothing really to worry about if this is the cause. What does the smoke smell like?

If the smoke is white, I seriously doubt it would be oil burning... if it's very humid where you are it could just be condensation burning out.

PS - have you completely checked the cooling system and the sump for any contamination? once overheated the V8 very well may start leaking at the liners.

No its not hot where i am.........i live in england so its not hot here!!

I check the oil every time i use it & the oil (mobile ow40) is as clear as the day it was poured in.

The coolant also gets checked every time & its just the same, no muck anywhere on the dipstick??

Basically the car (bar the oil leak at the front coming about runs perfectly, just cant get my head round it, the smoke smells of oil a little, but not like the typical stench when things are really bad?
And as i say, as soon as you drive her, it clears in seconds

If it does it on a Downshift, then its probably the Valve Guides.
