Help!

I’d been driving my Esprit '98 GT3 for about 30 minutes the other day, when water appeared from the front of the car – in front of and through the right headlight. The liquid was clear, and wasn’t steam. The battery and oil warning lights both came on, but the engine temperature didn’t move and stayed around 80 degrees C., so I stopped the car and got recovered home.

I’ve just started the car and let it idle, the battery warning light stays on and the oil warning light is on but goes off if I rev the car to about 2000 rpm. The engine warning light also keeps flicking on about every 5 seconds. The engine coolant level doesn’t seem to have moved and is at the top, and the oil level is ok. I’ve plugged in Freescan and the ECU is reporting error code 35 (IAC error or bad misfire). I reset the IAC position with the ignition on but the engine off, and reset the error codes, and the error code hasn’t come back.

I had a cat replacement pipe fitted last week, and the engine has been slightly poping when changing gear. I assumed too much fuel was getting to the exhaust and wouldn’t cause a problem.

Anyone any ideas?

I can e-mail anyone the freescan log of the car idling if anyone has any ideas that may help!

popping is the unburnt fuel your correct.

did you make sure you reset the ecu and iac when the engine was cold? otherwise it will learn incorrectly.

if you have freescan it tells you exactly hose to do it towards the back of the book. only because it can cause stalling when on a cold day if it is reset incorrectly.

any puffs of white smoke from the exhaust?

whats the oil level like?

presume you have checked the level of the washer bottle. i know that wouldnt cause ecu light etc but just incase you have 2 seperate problems.

id certainly reset the ecu if the car seems to be idling ok.

id be interested to see what you find.
im not much of a mechanical head only know bits but its usually trial and error with this sort of stuff or seek professional advice.

Why not call technical support at the factory. They are always really helpful

Just to add another suggestion along with Daves washer bottle as your water prob seems a bit odd/unrelated.

You do realise that the hole that the headlights tuck into is nothing more than a bowl with a small 5mm hole in the bottom to allow the water to drain out, this can easily get blocked leaving you driving round with a bowl of water under your headlight that inevitably gets thrown all over the front of the car as soon as you belt your first bump.

only as unrelated as the head light pod really.

just trying to find where the water has come from. it may not be related to the fault he has.

Nah, that's exactly what i meant Dave, his problem with water being thrown out of the front of the car does look a trifle unrelated to his actual problem - given that he says that he's not lost any water from the engine - and is probably a red herring, so I'd be looking along the lines of causes like your washer bottle or my headlight pod
