How to check the Check Engine light

I want to verify that my Check Engine light is actually working. I am suspicious because it didn't go on when a boost line came off my 98 Esprit. Anybody know a safe & simple way to test it. I do have a code reader and it seems to connect ok.

Simple one... turn the key on... it lights initially before you start the engine. I've seen one wastegate line disconnected before and the ECM did not flag any error.

Yeah, it's odd, you'd think the overboost light would come on. Did the boost come off your 2000 V8? Any problems from that?

Twas a friend's 99 V8... he had a cambelt service done. They knocked the boost line off of one turbo and nicked a camshaft seal in the process as well (oil leak). The car ran poorly but no check engine light. We fixed the boost line of course and he went back to the dealer for the leaking camshaft seal.
