I had to remove the battery to replace the alternator but now I find that when the car is started from cold it does not want to accelerate in the first 1 mile,[maybe smarter than me]. Also the temp gauge sometimes keeps rising to max when the car is still cold, when turned off and restarted works fine.Any idea of what the problem is would be appreciated

Look for a lose ground connection or other lose connections. On the 4 cylinders, the battery + goes to the starter solenoid and connects with the alternator output, which then feeds the rest of the car. Look there too.

Somewhere in the book, it says "most electrical problems can be traced to a bad ground." At least it did in my Europa manual (and was it ever right, grounds and them damn English bullet connectors.)
