Tried this on the Yahoo forum, but didn't get any bites, so thought I'd try here.
Hopefully somebody on this site is versed in the Renault UN-1 box.
Will be putting the trans. together tommorrow so I need an opinion ASAP (if possible).
Thank you!

Greetings all!
A simple question about the Renault UN-1 tranny in an '89.
Used the machine shop to press gears, etc. off and on the secondary
motion
shaft to replace the 1st and 2nd gear syncros. The syncros in this
position
use a different method to hold them in place than the 3rd and 4th
gear
syncros, namely a round wire thingie.
Before I brought the shaft to the machine shop, it SEEMED the syncro
sleeve (the part that the shift fork would act on) had a definite
tendancy to
center itself, and when moved to either 1st or 2nd gear position, to
want to
stay there. In short, it acted like it had detents. After the shop
put in the
new syncros (a slightly different design), the syncro sleeve floats
very
smootly back and forth, with only a small tendancy to center itself
(because
of the springs), but does not have any inclination to lock, or stay
into
position when 1st or 2nd is selected.
I put this down to two reasons.
1) After examining the syncro assembly, there doesn't appear to be
any
mechanism to lock to 1st or 2nd gear. The positioning and centering
of the
sleeve is solely determined by the shift rail and its detents.
2) The old syncros were being showered with debris from a failing
bearing
above it, and were jamming, giving me "faux detents".
Now the question.
What do you guys think?
Thanks for reading.

That sounds about the same as when I had my gearbox apart and looked at.
All seemed to move smoothly with little resistance to a single position.

Can't be 100% if it is supposed to be that way but after 12,000 miles it's still going strong.

I am using a UN1 gearbox from a R21 Turbo but the primary design is the same, can't see why lotus would change anything so fundemental.
