Well I managed to break the switch. It was loose in the panel and the system wasn't working properly so I decided to look for a loose connection behind the panel. Well the switch body was loose, seemed to be secured only by the wires and the knob on the front of the panel. After trying to find a bayonet mount or something similar the knob now spins without turning the system on or off.

So to the questions: First, is this the correct part no. for the switch - Lucas 5R 78526? Second, has anyone replaced this switch? If so, does the knob simply pull off? Any tips on replacing the switch?

Hey Bill,
I have seen a web page somewhere detailing how to pull the switch knobs, but I can't find it. From memory, there is a detent on the knob. I forget the exact mechanism, but you either have to unscrew a retaining screw or push in a spring loaded thingie or something like that. A flashlight and a magnifying glass will probably go a long way on getting the knob off.

Thanks Dr. Hess

I may need a dental mirror as well. Spoke with JAE and the switch is available. The gentleman at JAE also mentioned screws behind the large knobs. If that's true, then I won't have to pull the radio again. Of course that is assuming I can get the knobs off without breaking them or the dash plate.

July in Oklahoma, black car with leather seats, no air conditioning - I think I've invented a new weight loss program.
