I have just put on a new secondary fuel pump as the old one was 'humming' at the end of my last road trip. The car was also "stumbling" under power on the last leg of the trip home and at the time I assumed it was due to this fuel pump going bad.

Well, I took the car up the street - and back- tonight because the stumbling and the lack of power are still a problem. I did run it a bit, but it did not clear up.

It does not idle perfect - but it never did...
Just as I get on the throttle, the stumble comes in and I move forward at a snails pace until I get rather high in the RPM (above 4500ish). Even then there is no real "go".

-I checked the timing (15 degrees TDC)
-Both fuel pumps seem to be good (as one is new and
the other less than 2 years)

Any ideas? Distributor issues? I tried to find some ideas in the search but there were tooooo many topics near to this but not quite to continue the search.

Assuming you checked the plugs and cables how is the injection system?

The cat matrix comes apart, I had to ram mine out with a stick.

It sounds like the Vacuum Pump is not operating properly.

All the vacume lines have been checked and no cracks (they are only about two years old at most). I checked the distributor cap and decided to replace it as it def. had some age on it. Replaced the rotor button as well... Anyway...

Now I am not getting any spark at all!!!
Is is possible that the amplifier was going bad and is now dead...? Given the symptons before: ramdom sputter, lack of power and, generally poor running...
This is the only part I can think of that would just crap out. There is 12 volts on the coil and the motor turns easy. There is def. not a problem with fuel getting in- this is def. a
"spark" issue.

Does anyone happen to have any notes on trouble shooting/ testing the amplifier. A previous post suggested that a ground wire inside the distributor came un-soldered... but I do not see any wires from the inside/ outide of the distributor except the ones running to the amplifier... 1 purpleish 1 redish and it appears the magnito (sp?) is on the other end...

buy yourself a cheap dwell meter. i can talk you through diagnosing the problem if it is ignition related. sounds more to me like a valve problem though. best wishes.

Sounds like you have confirmed that it is an ignition problem. If you can get at the coil, you can test the coil and the HT side quite easily. You should find that the coil has ignition switched 12v on one side and is earthed (via the ignition amplifier) on the other. If you disconnect the ignition amp from the coil, you should be able to generate a spark by briefly earthing that side of the coil. If you put the king lead within a couple of mil of a good earth you should see a strong spark each time you do this. Be careful because you can also get a jolt on the low tension side when you do this. If this works then it indicates that the problem is with the points or the ignition amplifier.

Check the wires going into the Distributor...what you're looking for is a cracked wire at the point where it enters into the Distributor or where it enters into the Pickup.

The D45 Distributor requires the wire to Flex back and forth everytime the Timing Advances or Retards.

In any event, I have a Complete Bosch Ignition and Injection System that was left over when I retro'd my 86 to the Delco System...

Did you pull off/put injection then? What a job...

Anyway, thanks for the input. I got around to calling JAE for another unrelated part and they supplied me with a great flow sheet for checking the ignition system and the ohms/voltage values. Narrowed it down to the coil pick-up in the 45DM distributor. I SHOULD be able to get one as it came from an MG... but I am still interested in what you have as I am not seeing to much in the replacement area. JAE is setting me up with a drop in part that replaces the pick up coil and the AB14...(?)

Is the Bosch system you have left over a direct replacement?
