Greetings,

A little background before I post my question. I recently installed my engine after having it out all winter doing alot of preventative maintenance work. My 90 SE has the blue racing chip and a newly installed upgraded T3/4 turbo. The exhaust has also been changed to a free-flow system without a CAT.

The problem:
The boost doesn't feel like it's kicking in all the way. It comes on strong initially but doesn't follow through all the way. My boost guage is only reading .9 bar but I know they're not very accurate. But I must mention that my stock turbo would nearly peg the gauge for short intervals. Although my stock turbo didn't have the strong initial kick that the upgraded turbo has it felt like it provided more upper boost.

I ran freescan and have attached the portions of the results. The ECU sees up to 2.23 bar but it sure doesn't feel like it. All the other readings look normal to my untrained eye. I have a feeling the my MAP sensor is giving the ECU improperly high readings. Also looking at the log, it appears that my wastegate duty cycle is kicking in early. Can anyone more familiar with freescan take a look at my log?

I've swapped out the chip with the #3 hi torque chip as well as reset the ECU several times but it didn't help. I also adjusted my wastegate per the manual directions. I unplugged the wastegate solenoid to verify that I was getting .65 bar (its plugged back in).

I'm tempted to install a manual boost contoller and see how it responds.

Thanks much,

Pete

Pete,

Your log file is not really long enough, I would like 10 min run, include data at idle, ful TPS range and stationary to check your MAP sensor.

You are getting more that .9 bar boost but I would agree I don't like the look of your solenoid boost control.

Wouldn't you know it, I finally got around to installing my t3/t4 a couple of weeks ago and am having the EXACT same symptoms. Unfortunately, my laptop was ripped off along with my aldl cable etc...so no freescan at the moment. btw, I dropped in a new boost control solenoid during the install because the original one was gooped up with oil from the faling original turbo. Also have verified .65bar on the wastegate spring. I have a strange feeling that the stock wastegate spring tension isn't cutting it.

Curious to see how this works out...

Do you have any chips besides the #3? That chip has a bad rep and did weird things to me.

See this dyno run:

F_cked up, huh?

Just switching it out to the stock S4 code made my car much smoother and *gained* me like 40hp (aloing with an exhaust). Seriously, swap in another chip and see what happens.

Thanks for looking. Here is the complete file:

Lucas,

Thanks for the response. The chip I used for the freescan file was the red race chip. I later put on the #3 chip to see if there was any difference (which there wasn't). After looking at your dyno results I'm going to remove the #3 and go back to the red race chip.

Thanks,

Pete

Who did your T3/4? I also thought it was the wastegate and it still may be. I adjusted it on the generous side (shortened for more boost) but it didn't make a difference. I just got a manual boost controller, if that doesn't do the trick then I know its the wastegate. I'll let you know.

Hey Pete,
TEC did my turbo for me back in February, and I just found some time to put it on. I also shortened up the wategate rod a few turns as it was opening really early. Still around .85~.90bar. Working #6chip.

I'm at work today, so no tinkering, but If I get anywhere with it I'll let you know.

No, I've got an intermittent stalling problem that I'm working on now. While troubleshooting that problem I discovered an oil leak in my recently upgraded turbo, so I'm sending that back to the shop. Looks like I'll be out of commission for the next few weeks. I do have the mbc sitting on the work bench though...
