I have had two viper's and one of the best mods was going to an aftermarket exhaust. Is this true for a Lotus V8. If so what brand and where is the best place to buy aftermarket parts?

Lots of good info.

I've had several different exhausts. Cheapest and IMO best option is to go for straight pipes. If you want more than that, a custom cat back system with high flow cats is probably the best option. You can spend an arm and a leg on tubi, hyperflow polished cat pipes but its not really necessary. A good custom system with some generic hi flow metal cats is all you need. Make sure you keep the 02 sensors in place to avoid 'check engine' light.

My Tubi article has a new URL due to me upgrading my site with the LLO code (Lazy Lotus Owner - using a CMS so that I can do site updates quickly without digging into HTML/XML):

Thanks, what about sound? I can do the straight pipe deal myself at home but I do want a good sound too.

IMHO straight pipes are too loud. My nieghbors would come after me with pitchforks and a rope if I fired up the Esprit with straights at 6:00am on a Sunday morning...

...by contrast the Tubi setup has a nice low rumble until you press the loud pedal.

I just went to the Tubi website and it doesn't show anything for an 02 esprit?

Hi,

my 98 V8GT has a sports system from Lotus and when compared to a standard V8 a few weeks ago was amazed with the difference!

Mine 'garggles' on idle where the other was very unassuming.

Def a worth while mod. Not sure about the straight through pipes though! Gee's must be unbelieveablely loud, especially on boost!

Cheers,

Stevie

All they have is the "old style" systems so you would probably have to ditch the "cheese grater" and add the rear splitter from Pre 2002...

Thats pretty cool you get a sports system as standard.

According to the sales invoice when new in was a 550.00 pounds sterling option.

Moto-concept (PUH!) do a 'straight pipes' type system that fits the 02 rear valence:

I have a '99 V8 and struggled with the decision to go to straight pipes for two years. I didn't want it to be too loud. I finally did it this year and left the stock cats inn place - it sounds great! I don't think it is hardly any louder, but it has a deeper rumble.

I bought mine from JAE. Go for it you won't be sorry!!

Brett:

I have straight pipes off of free-flow catalytic converters and it sounds just awesome. As an example while at Road Atlanta last year a guy walked up to me saying he'd heard my car all day and finally figured out it was me. Said it sounded better then anything else there including his Ferrari 360.

I rest my case!
