I've seen on the Esprit Fact File that the Lotus 4-cylinder ECM is Chevrolet Part #16198267. Am I correct in thinking this is just the chip and not the entire computer (not sure how to refer to that)? Either way, whilst I'm in the US on business, where can I pick up the above (if it is the entire unit) or, if not, the entire unit?

Does that make any sense?

In short, I am after a complete computer. Oh, and how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks.

Jason. '89 SE.

I believe that is the entire computer, less the memcal. That is, you have to re-use your old memcal with the GM 01228708 computer. To buy one, just go to your local US auto parts store and tell them you need a Delco 01228708, for a 89 Quad 4, 1990-91 2.3 DOHC L4 PFI “D” LD2, or 1990 2.3 DOHC L4 PFI “A” LG0 (“W” body).

I believe that specifically, if you go to Autozone (a large chain here) and ask for a Cardone 77-8707 for $80 plus $140 core, that will be it, which fits a 1990 Buick Skylark with 2.3L Quad 4. The same unit is $90 with a $70 core at O'Reilly's Auto Parts, another large chain. As you won't have a core to give back, O'Reilley's is the better deal.

The cross reference information is believed to be reliable and came from Bob "Yehaa too" Metz, archived on http://home.flash.net/~hess/crystal_princess.htm

The 01228708 is correct for an SE or S4(s), but the xxxxx707 is correct only for an '89 non-SE. The two are completely different. My recommendation is to get a genuine Delphi reconditioned one from a GM dealer, they are not terribly expensive.

Can anyone explain why these cars have different ECU's?
I have an S4s but can't marry my ECU with the part numbers in the parts book.
Parts Book
A910E7038F = 1479
B910E7038F = 6519
C910E7038F = 5879
P691.4205.001BF = S300
A910E7044F = S4/S4s US

Mine has a part number of A082U7223 with Lotus S4S printed on it.

Question, can I run the SE onward chips that I've seen?

Cheers,

Sure, no problem. Starting with the SE, all chargecooled cars have the same base ECM. The only difference, and the reason for the varied part numbers, is the code on the EPROM in the memcal. Note that the memcal is NOT included with replacement ECMs from GM or the aftermarket, as Dr. Hess pointed out.
