Please guys this is the first world - I think that everyone reading this lives where we are innocent until proven guilty.
Nobody seems to want ot admit that copying electronics is a way of life.
1)Music CD's ( Here in Canada it is Legal as the blank CDs have a small amount of money that goes to the music industry ).
2)Then there is the Lotus service instructions that are copied like crazy.
3) endless amounts of consumer electronics. (who paid big bucks for an early Laser Disc player)?

Seems like if you want the information first ( new music, fist copy of service manual, new chip for computer, ) then you have to pay the developper. If you are willing to wait. Then you can get a low cost copy later one. For sure it is buyer beware and there is often something lost in the copy.
What if you wanted a copy of Windows3.1 now? can you even buy that legally?

BUT MY ISSUE is not the above.....

I would like to know if there is a way to tell if the chip in my posession is a clone or not. I cant take the word ( even from an expert like Marcus) that it is a clone totally sight unseen.

Do the legitimate chips have a certain sticker? How can I test it? Surely there is some computer guy localy that can plug this chip into a socket on a work bench and read some of the information.
Keep in mind that from my perspective I have 2 sides to this story..the other guy ( Ian ) is still in daily email communication with me and will not admit it is a clone.

Hi Bruce,
If it is an original one from me I can tell you for sure when I have it in my hands (or if you send me two pics showing the top and bottom side). All my chips have a unique physical identification marking.

Cheers

Is not the chip just a standard, off the shelf EPROM ? These can be copied with any old EPROM programmer so it's impossible to check if the chip has been "cloned" or not as the code in the original and code in teh copy will be indentical, all the 1's and 0's will be the same !!

What I meant is that all my chips get something like a unique marking/engraving ... its very little and someone else will not spot it.

For example, its the same like engraving your signature or initials into the body of the eprom.

Whenever I see a chip that is from me I can identify it.
