Has anyone ever "threaded" their sump plug on a V8 '97MY ?? I seem to be turning it forever and don't seem to be able to unscrew it either. If anybody has done this, how did it get fixed. On my last car(a Bertone X1/9- don't knock it 'til you've driven one !!!), this happened and it was fixed by using a conical section gearbox plug in place of the regular item. The difference was that we could get that one out. If the plug really is "turning forever", what can I do short of removing the sump ? Please help !

Haven't had that happen to my Esprit, but it has happened on my Toyota Truck. I used a replacement from the auto parts store like you did for your Fiat.

Now, for your immediate problem, I am 99% certain that the threads on my 910 motor drain plug are 1/2" BSP (British Standard Pipe, not BSPT). I would bet that a V8 is the same. So, if you can find one of those repair kits for 1/2" BSP, you might be in good shape. Otherwise, something is going to have to come off.

To get the stripped one out, try to wedge something between the sump and the plug when you unscrew it. Might have to sacrafice a knife.

Well, guess what ??!! The Esprit went in for its annual service last week and I got the dreaded phone call 3 days later. "It seems that your sump plug came out at an angle and the thread followed it, you need a new sump ! Bugger !.. Good news is tyhat a sump is only £450.. Bad news is that it won't come off and the engine had to come out ! Fifteen hundred quid ! It's a good job its the best car in the world really. I also can't help wondering what warranty would have said about this ! DIRE WARNING !! SEE V8 CAMBELT THREAD !!!!! Anybody got any part time rock star jobs going this week..Oh and STILL don't tell the wife, she already thinks my car is crap !

The auto parts stores sell little fix-it plugs for cases like that. It threads a new hole into the pan slightly larger and seals. Might cost you U$5. I'd have tried that first. Also, the sump is just aluminum. No reason it couldn't be repaired very easily. Just TIG or MIG up the hole, drill and tap a new one and you're done. Cost: U$35. You do have to take it off for that, though.

I've still got one - they are indeed a great drive, and a bargain - which is why I've still got one. It's only worth a few hundred pounds, so I keep putting off selling it as it's hardly worth the hassle.

I assume it's a steel Sump ? Aluminium ? Take said sump to a GOOD welder and get them to weld a new piece of metal on, and then drill and tap it to suit any size sump plug you fancy. I reckon 50 quid should sort it !!!

you can't be sure if you have proper weld penetration unless you remove the sump and xray it; that or pop a small camera inside. better to just enlarge the existing hole and tap that. i've seen some very large sump plugs in my time, mostly from diesel trucks.

I have not had that happened to me. Just drop the sump and repair it right, it's not bad. Did the service man do it? Make him fix it.

It is possible to drop the sump without removing the engine from the car. Requires removing the flywheel, but sounds like that is going to have to come off anyway. Ask Helicoil if they do a kit for the BSP thread as that is the simplest repair. Otherwise have the thread area filled with weld, machine it flush, then drill and tap a new thread.

Or get a used pan, there must be plenty of junk V8's around.

The cost of the sump wasn't the problem, it was the cost of fitting it !
