Hi Chris,
This is a very good question ... and you will get a lot of different even diametral answers ;o)

It depends a lot on your whole engine setup:
- is it almost stock
- is it modified (to what extend)
- do you like to increase low down and midrange torque OR do you like to increase only higher rpm power ?

I personally prefer enlarged true T3 turbo setups with the Esprit 4-Cylinder engines because these have the most even/smooth power delivery from low-midrange to high rpms.

Cheers

Hey Marcus,
What is your opinion about wheels for a stock 89 non-SE? Keep the stock wheels or something else? John (Squelch) leans toward just leaving it alone.
My turbo is out right now. I don't have any plans on boosting HP, just using what is there most efficiently.

the engine is all stock for now except for the s4 mk5 chip and at the most all i would ever do is BOV valve. cat back mufler. and maybe injectors.
i am more looking for good drivability as i really don't want much turbo lag and don't want to spend a bunch of money.
Thanks

I just had the turbo on my SE upgraded by Majestic turbo. He used the same compressor and turbine housing and was able to make the compressor a T3/4 hybrid and added a stage 2 turbine wheel for better spooling. I should have the engine back in the car this weekend. I'll let you know how it performs.

Did you use Majestic Turbo in Waco or the one in Dallas?

They're both the same company. I used the one in Waco. Dealt with Kevin, the owner. He's a very informative fellow.

Cool. Kevin has my turbo right now. I met him about 6 years ago at a Harley open house in Bryan. He had his drag bikes there. Turbocharged Harley's with 6 or 8 hundred horse.

Hi Dr.Hess,
I personally like the T3 Super60 (or similar) quite a lot. Uses the stock turbine and a bigger 60 compressor. Of course the compressor housing has to get enlarged and widened. Please also let them install GOOD 360° bearings that can take the axial load way better than the crap stock C-bearings.

Cheers

Thanks, Markcus. They are tearing it down now for inspection. Their balancing machine was broken so that has slowed their end. I am building my stainless manifold right now anyway, so some extra down time doesn't matter.

Dr. Hess:
You have taken my comments out of context.
You approached me and asked about doing a "stock" rebuild of the turbo and I recommended staying with the stock parts.

If your doing an upgrade, then there are many options available, all dependent upon the budget.

Sorry John. I must have misunderstood you. Didn't mean to mis-quote or do a Democrat (out-of-context quote) on you. My goals are first off, to have a functioning turbo instead of the paperweight I currently have, and second, if the rebuild costs are all close to the same because it is going to need new guts anyway, a more efficient unit that will use the rest of the motor to its fullest potential without adding a charge cooler, changing code, adding secondary injectors, etc. I asked the shop about a ball bearing center, but that adds U$1K by itself, and is out of my budget. So, my original question (and not to hijack the SE thread with my non-SE) was what could I do for about the same costs or a little more to the turbo being rebuilt that would make it work better, last longer, and be more efficient. I assume that going to a bigger compressor wheel like the 60 would mean that the air is compressed with less heat added from the compressor, which would be a good thing. And as rich as the stock code runs, I would think that the lower charge temp should be OK without changing the code.

You could go to a 60 trim, but you have to remember that the larger compressor wheel is going to add to the spool up time.. more lag.. and once you machine out the housing, you can't go back smaller without purchasing a new housing.

Any reason you haven't swapped out that ECM and put the one from the SE in yet ?

Well, haven't really needed it. I suppose it is on my list of "stuff to do," but wouldn't I also need the extra injector setup and change the location of the temp sensor? All that and the code plus the computer would be pushing one large, and I don't have that budgeted.

Think I'll just stick with stock trim for right now. I certainly don't need any later spool up.

He does not do any "indy car" turbos, and neither does anyone else.

"Indy Cars" are normally aspriated.

Champ cars or CART cars are turbocharged.
