it is my understanding that ALL S4s are called 1995.5 cars... if you have a 95-1/2 you have an S4s and vice versa..
correct me if you are wrong.

Hi,
The S4s has the letters "S300" stamped into the cylinder-head.

Go to www.lotusesprit.org

Down the bottom on the home page you will see the link to the Vin number decoder on the Lotus Esprit Factfile.

The thing is I´m confused as when you check the VIN there is number that makes refernec for it as an 95 1/2MY(3) and another number for an S4s (4) so i guess there must be some diference Thank for the engine tip I will ask for apicture of it.

best Regards to all fo you and hope to join all of you as a Lotus Owner

all of this kinda still makes me wonder what is different about the california cars?

i have an S4s and the vin decoder says it has a 50 state motor in it..does that make sense?

I am planning a cam sproket change to green dot ones .. wonder what difference i will see..

Bruce,
The difference isn't startling, but it's noticeable. More low end torque and a more lively sense of urgency. I haven't heard people complain about it.

Bruce,
The major change was the B-prefix timing belt necessitated by California's requirement that timing belts last 100k miles. The B-belt subsequently became the standard service replacement part across the board. But even then, the timing belt service interval for non-California engines was significantly shorter than 100k miles.

I don't know with certainty, but I'm of the opinion the bulk of the differences are paper differences having to do with the greater service commitment California required Lotus to make to cars sold in that state. A unique ID facilitated tracking that obligation and limiting it to cars actually sold in California.
