Any comments on ECM Readers ?

I was thinking of buying an engine ECM reader. trouble is, it seems a bit confusing. I would like to be able to read data and trouble codes and put the MIL out (the £300 one) but the idea of live graphing is also appealing (the £90 one) I am also worried it might not work (my car is avery late "early V8") it is 97 MY but with a twin plate clutch (car number 287) Any advice would be welcome. Thanks !
