Not certain if this will answer your question, but I happened across this website a couple of years ago. Disclaimer time: I know nothing about the site or what they do with the numbers you input.

All the same, I was crazy enough to try it and suffered no ill effects.

Hi,
thanks for the the link but this doesn't really help. They accept only VINs with at least 17 characters, but the one i have has only 10. I think Lotus changed the type of VIN in 1980. Is there any other esprit driver who has a S2 with a VIN starting with "79110"?

Vin Number:
79110xxxx for example...
79 = year of manufacture.
11 = month of manufacture, November, 1979.
0xxxx = serial number.

Engine number:
DC 907 791112844 for example...
DC = Basic engine build spec and equipment variation where applicable (may be a singel letter prefix).
907 = 2.0 liter (912 = 2.2 liter)
79 = year
11 = month
12844 = serial number

Hi Tim,
many thanks! I assume now that the "G" on the end says that it's for the german market.

Axel,

The alpha suffix isn't usually as obvious as G = German, and I don't know off the top of my head what all the suffix letters are. Sorry.
