Hi Everyone,

I went back and read all of the threads about about gearbox oils ...lots of information there. I wanted to know where I can acquire the castrol taf-x or the mobil shc 630. From what I have read on the previous threads those 2 would be my choices, but I cannot seem to find them on the internet and my local Lotus dealer does not sell lube to the public. I am in the philadelphia area. I appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Jason,

JAE carries the Castrol product.

Graingers (an industrial supply) carries the Mobil SHC630. But notice that Lotus specified 630M which is no longer available. I haven't heard anyone clearly define the significance of the M and whether or not plain old SHC630 is as effective in the Esprit-Renault. Quite a few Esprit-Renault owners are using it thought.

Mobil SHC 630 can be purchased from any mobil products distributor, usually in quart bottles or 5-gallon bucket. Grainger seems to stock the quart bottles. Average price will be ~$11USD per quart.

As Castrol does not import the TAF-X gearlube into the US, check with some of the British car dealers that carry Jaguar as many of them do import it with other maintenance items. Just expect a high markup... I've seen it sold from a dealer for $15USD for 500ml, which is $90USD for a lube change.

Some of the Lotus dealers have used Mobil-1 Synthetic Gearlube 75W-90 GL-5 in the Esprit gearboxes during service and it seems to be fine as well. Also, some owners swear by Redline MT-90 (I'm not among them).

I've used the mobil 1 stuff for the ~5000 miles I've owned my car and my tranny feels really great these days.. I changed it over after ~1000 miles then again 3000 miles later. Even reverse engages smoothly now. I know 5k miles isnt much of a long term test but so far so good. Also helps that the mobil 1 stuff is like $4 a liter and available pretty much everywhere.

I use Mobil 1 75W-90 and it works great. My shifter and tranny are one of the best on an Esprit that I have ever felt. Though the direct feel of a 99 Sport 350 was better.
