I have seen some correspondence on BOV's. Have a 1990 Turbo (non SE), I take it would be good to get a BOV. In particular what are the advantages, is there particular types I should look at, are they difficult to install, are they simply spring loaded or do they need electrical work done. ??

www.lotusespritworld.co.uk then click
on maintenance, then go to dump valves.
It basically keeps the turbo spinning
instead of being slowed down by air
trapped with it when shifting.

No they are not. You have tons of Esprit Turbo's (no chargecooler like in the SE) and I 'think' that NA models were still being made in 1990. Maybe only SE's were brought in the US in 1990, but the rest of the world had the other models too.

thanks, I had the same problem trying to sort out the SE issue. Mine does not have a chargecooler but does seem to have all the extra's, oh well (nor the fatter tyres) but it still goes like a beauty.

Took it to see my relatives last weekend, they couldnt believe what a fantastic car and almost all said it was their dream car. When they asked how much it was they were shocked, most expected around $100K Aussie but I only paid $40K ($20kUS) for mine and it looks brand new with a fantastic red paint job.

Also got some new air horns on the weekend and had a bad case of sad cow disease which then turned to distressed whale. I didnt change the air compressor but its making a strange noise so will need to change it too.

Virtually every Esprit that was Aust delivered has full options. Even the GT3 had leather interior, A/C, etc.

If you see any S4 for sale where you are, please let me know as I am desperately trying to find one for my lady and we just have had no luck anywhere in the country. Ideally a red one with tan/magnolia, but even if it's not that colour scheme is OK as we would just have to re paint it/redo the interior.

Even a Series 5 like yours or an SE would do if it's perfect. We'll just add power steering to it As long as the Series 5 is manufactured from March '89 onwards. There's a few of them that are '88 model years that are being sold as '90 or '91 just because that was their first year of registration. The easiest way to tell without looking at the VIN is from the mirrors. The March '89 onwards have the same external mirrors as the current Esprits, while the '88 models have the previous S3 mirrors. We don't want the '88 models as they have the S3 mechanicals as well. The model only became truly a new model from March '89 manufacturing date, before that it was just an S3 in new clothes.
Anyway, that's probably more info that you were asking for, so I'll leave it here

Oh yes, forgot - now that you have an Esprit EVERYONE will point at you on the street, you park it somewhere, you come back and the windows are covered in finger prints, etc. They are so addictive you will never enjoy driving another car. And everyone believes that they are worth a fortune! Have fun!

Mine was manufactured in 1990 but first registered in 1991, if I see any S4's I'll let you know. Your over in WA, is that correct ?. If so, do you have any problems with the hotter weather in summer.

2 Esprits in the one family ??. The only grief I got on the weekend was that my wife had to take the kids (2yrs and 10 months) in the stationwagon and I drove the esprit in and out of traffic. I never thought of selling the wagon for another esprit but we only have 2 little kids so they would fit - will think more about it. Having said that, my wagon was a lovely hotted Commodore with mags, lovely paint job, tinted windows etc. Then after parking doing the shopping it looks like the car been through a smash up derby so I could not let an esprit go through that.

Do you have a back wing for yours. Am thinking of getting one but make the rear view a bit limited.

Yep, WA. Hot weather doesn't affect it at all. Just don't park with the windscreen facing the sun or the car will be boiling when you get inside it.

I have a S4s and the wing on it gives you terrible rear view visibility. Also, before this S4s I had a '89 Series 5 and that had the wing. That's a smaller wing and it didn't bother me at all when driving. Plus that wing makes the Series 5 look SOOOOO much more modern, sleek and more of a supercar. You really have to get it believe me. You know how the Esprit looks funny from the rear quarter view when you look at it without the wing? With the wing it looks good. Not as good as from other angles but MUCH improved.

Yep, two Esprits. My girl is into them as much as I am. But we will still keep our Lexus as everyday car. You have to, otherwise the Esprits would get wrecked. There are places that you just shouldn't take an Esprit to.

Just a warning, you can not fit the power steering to an SE without extreme frame mods. The universal joint for the S4 fits in recessed welded notch on the front T of the frame that the SE frame does not have. Also the steering rack points are in different places and triangles will have to welded to accomodate the PS rack of the S4. The body will have to be removed to do this. If you are going to ask if I am certain and how I know read on. A friend Keen lives a few miles from me and from time to time I help out on the project when he requests assistance. The help is in physical way as he is more adept at Esprit's than I am. Check out this link.

Thanks for that. For some reason my Lotus shop here made me be under the impression that they can just add power steering to an SE for a few thousand $. Maybe not standard Lotus power steering? I have to have another word with them. Thanks again.

No thanks needed,t his is what the forum is for. Just did not want to find you in the same situation as Keen. I know what he must do and it is not something I would like to do. At least his car was in for restoration and not a clean example. It would not be the first time that a shop got someone in to trouble. I guess there possibly might be an after market or different PS unit that the Lotus shop was thinking about. Oh also the if the steering rack is too large the coolant outlets will also have to be moved from where they penetrate the SE frame T section for the radiator.

Hi Jason.

I have a 89 Turbo (non se) and have been looking at this BOV issue. It seems that all the "standard" kits are designed for a chargecooled car and not our type. It may be the only way to fit one is get a universal Valve and have it custom fit. Maybe someone has idea's on how easy that is to do.????

Yes, I am beginning to get the feeling that this is the case. Thanks for your reply.

Is there anyone out there who can help us ?. I am happy enough to take it to a std turbo shop but would prefer to do something that has been successful elsewhere on a lotus.

You guy's with the non chargecoolers will either have to put a hole in the turbo plenum,manifold,or diffuser and mount it there. Much harder job than our cars that's for sure. The only other alternative would be to fit the BOV into the hose comming out of the turbo itself and the diffuser. I wonder if the kits for the chargecooler (i think 60mm) BOV hose would fit in this area. It would seem to work as all you are doing is moving the BOV unless the heat would cook it being so close to the turbo.
