I've done both timing belt adjustments and replacements on the V8... you don't need to remove the engine. You do need some special tools however and the procedure (which is quite lengthy) from the service notes. The belts are tensioned by frequency and the cambelt pulleys are NOT keyed. So you do have to be careful doing the procedure.

Also, the clutch in the V8 is a twin-plate unit made by AP Racing. I've replaced one of these too... not a bad job and a previous post outlines this. It is only sold as a complete assembly which includes the release bearing. I think is possible to have the unit rebuilt however.

I contacted AP Racing to try to get a clutch direct from them for mine who repied;

Thank you for your enquiry,

AP Racing sell this clutch to lotus direct and is not available on the open market.

Fanx AP

I've since gone to a Lotus dealership {who were incredibly friendly and helpful, and now my new best friends }, but lets just say price wise "First Born Virgin Daughters" are the order of the day

All V8 cars should have a cambelt service done at 12K miles or 18 months. Belt replacement is scheduled for 36K miles or 4-1/2 years. This is for the US at least.

As I do my own, I do a tension adjustment and timing check every 10K miles and a replacement every 40K miles (belts and tensioners).
