Was doing the pre-driving inspection of my SE and noticed that one of the ignition wires was all melted just when it passes infront of the engine.
Need to change that ASAP? or else will become a fireball?
And now that I'm changing that, is it advisable to upgrade those?, is there going to be any performance difference?, or it's just better to stick with the original Ignition cables.

Greetings and have a nice labor day

What do you mean passes in front of the engine? Looking from the rear of the car you see the turbo, just to the front left of the turbo you should see silver heat sheild. The wire should pass in between this heat sheild and the top valve cover. Where are your wires routed?

Are the wire running in between the heat shield and valve cover or near the turbo? Where are the wires melting?

Anytime you run an aftermarket wire you not only get better ignition but you do several other things also. You cut down on radio interference, and decrease the chances of burning your new wires. My advice is to go with some aftermarket wires. As far as were to get them your guess is as good as mine but Im willing to bet anywere that sells aftermarket performance parts for a lotus should also carry an array of ignition parts.

Where are you getting your information from? The aftermarket manufacturers? Aftermarket parts are not tested to anything like the degree that standard parts are. It's not like the standard Lotus parts are cheap rubbish is it?

Do you have the wire looms in place to hold the wires in place?

Wow there turbo, Ive been selling aftermarket parts to the general public for 4 years now and in my opinion it would be a better buy. His stock part burned off in stock location under its protective heat sheild. Now Im no Lotus basher in fact I love the car to death but that sounds like "cheap rubbish" to me. Aftermarket performance parts are designed to do better then the stock part. If they didnt then there would be no use for them and trust me there is. Besided Lotus isnt known best for its wonderfull electrical parts. AND by aftermarket I talking about the performance end.

Not sure on this one. I have never had problem with my OEM plug wires. Some performance ones are supposed to be very good. I guess it all comes down to ROI/DR, return on investment or diminshing return. How much more/less for the part and what claims for better performance. I would say if the wires burned, it either came off the loom or was routed in a different way that came in contact with heat. He never really said how the wires were placed or if the looms are in place. I haven't heard of burned OEM wires being a chronic problem. Has anyone???

The only time I ever hear of them is like you said, mis routing or acasionally on a car with headers. Acasionaly the extra heat will do a number to an oem set of wires, but with direct contact it may do the same over time to the best set of aftermarkets also. So it all comes down to application.

Make sure to use the looms and the correct path. Any wire will burn even good ones. Keep it away from the turbo, use the spark plug shields in between the cam covers.
