Shift linkage help

Recently the forward/back shift cable broke on my 91SE. I replaced it but cannot adjust the cables properly. The car will not go into either reverse or 5th gear. It seems the cross(left to right) movement is not enough to engage either gear. I've adjusted the translator 4mm offset towards the transmission as the service manual suggests, and both cables were "neutral" when bolted to the translator. Also - does the translator adjustment shaft supposed to be slightly bent? It would be a great help if someone would explain how the three adjustments effect the gear selection (both cables and the translator adjustment linkage) Thanks
