while my esprit was parked in a crowded university lot, some oaf left a giant handprint on my front window glass. more distressing were the cracks underneath. hopefully it wasn't done intentionally, but who knows. i'll claim it to my auto insurance, but there is a $400 deductible. the cracks start in the lower left hand corner and work up and around the handprint. i'm guessing they'll spread. what bad luck i seem to be having.

Hi,

Sorry you had this ruin your day! But, check your auto policy, most glass coverage is non-deductible, so you'll possibly get a break there.

Do your research about whom you contract to replace the windscreen.I had mine replaced and 3 mos., two broken replacements (during installation), and a couple letters from my lawyer later, and I finally agreed to accept the work, and this from a company who was recommended by the local Lotus dealer! Shop around and stay away from any stop and go type of Glass replacement company.

That stinks. Sorry to hear that. Happy to hear that the paint and body were unaffected though. My Esprit was keyed on three panels a year ago. Took eight months in the shop before they got the pearl white paint to my satisfaction. However, like I always say, for every bad, there is always some good. Have you ever had the windshield replaced on any of your cars, especially an older car? Glass scratches and degrades slowly over time. When you install a new windshield, that's when you realize how bad the old one really was. The view out of a new windshield is downright GLORIOUS! Get your car to a shop soon. The sooner it's there, the better you'll feel.

thanks lads. your empathy is a comfort. now that i really look at the location of the handprint, it seems the culprit is a parking sticker snoop. these numerous fiends make their living making sure your parking number is authentic and current. mine is mounted under the front windscreen bottom middle, and the enormous person must also have been nearsighted. can't prove anything without video footage, but i'll keep a lookout for jumbo.

Hi,

One thought occurs to me. As you stated, this was a University parking lot. Increasingly these days, such lots are under video surveillance. You might try to confirm this and request access to the video for that time/place. You may not have any luck, then again...

there is video surveillance, but not out as far as i need to park sometimes(12 minute walk to class). good thought though. thanks. i am talking to several auto glass companies now, and i'll wait until i find one which can show proficiency. i copied the procedure from the service manual, and sent it off to them. that way, they'll be informed of what it entails. the most difficult part looks like getting the old glass and glue off.
