Cat removal - no longer overboosts

This may be unrelated, but since fitting a cat bypass pipe to my '89 SE, the car doesn't seem to overboost anymore. Instead the gauge runs out at about .8 - .9 bar boost. I haven't reset the ECU to see if this sorts it. Could the 2 things be related or could something else be the problem?
